BASED ON POLICY NUMBER AND TITLE: 2-18-0 MISSION STATEMENT

PURPOSE: To provide guidelines for counselors and other staff to use in determining customer/client eligibility for various personal counseling and career information and planning, career counseling, testing services and follow-up activities. An individual's eligibility for service varies with the nature of the service requested and whether the customer/client is a student, prospective student, returning student, alumni, or  member of the community.

  1. PERSONAL COUNSELING SERVICES
    1. Counselors (or graduate intern/practicum students under staff supervision) may provide personal counseling services to any enrolled student.
    2. Counselors may also provide these services to former students who are "sitting out a semester" and/or who are clearly preparing to return to the college.
    3. The department is neither staffed nor missioned to provide extended psychotherapy. Counselors will refer cases requiring treatment or services beyond the staffing capabilities of the department to appropriate community resources (public and/or private).
    4. Counselors may provide support in situations on campus that involve crisis intervention regardless of the enrollment status of the person(s) in crisis. Staff will take appropriate immediate actions and then facilitate any needed referrals and/or follow-up.
  2. CAREER DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
    1. Staff may provide career development services to any enrolled student or alumni.
    2. Staff may also provide career development services to:
      1. applicants who are in the process of enrolling (have completed an application and paid the accompanying fee), or
      2. to persons who are receiving career development services through other privately or publicly funded organizations or agencies until or unless he/she made a decision to apply to and enroll in the college, or
      3. prospective students considering application to the college who require career development services to assist them in making that decision, or
      4. middle or high school students (public or private) in appropriately supportive roles of or in collaboration with career development services being provided to them at their own schools, or
      5. by other members of the community on a case by case and space/staff available basis not excluded in items 3.a., 3.b., or 3.c. below.
    3. The following exclusions exist on the provision of the College's career development services:
      1. Career development services to individuals or groups of individuals involved in privately funded career development activities who are not likely to enroll in the college.
      2. Career development services to individuals or groups of individuals involved in privately funded career development activities (even if they are likely to enroll in the college) if the services requested at TTC are (or should be) typically included as part of the costs charged by the private provider.
      3. Career development services to persons who are receiving career development services through other privately or publicly funded organizations or agencies until or unless he/she has made a decision to apply to and enroll in the college.
  3. SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
    1. Counselors are readily available to assist students with disabilities and may assist prospective, enrolling, enrolled or returning students within the specialized range of needs and concerns of this area.
    2. The department is neither staffed nor missioned to conduct formal assessments or evaluations regarding diagnosis of disabilities or other ADA/Section 504 qualifying conditions. However, counselors will refer persons needing these services to appropriate external sources when available.
  4. ACADEMIC SUCCESS SERVICES
    1. Counseling and career development services staff  may provide a variety of academic success services to enrolled students, students returning from or serving academic suspension, or formerly enrolled students who are clearly returning to the college for further study.
    2. Staff will refer requests for academic success services that are outside of the capabilities of the department to appropriate external and/or internal sources.
