OUR GOAL

The goal of the Dental Hygiene Clinic is to provide access to quality oral health care and assist patients in eliminating and preventing oral disease while providing a quality education to our students.

The facility is staffed and supervised by licensed dental hygienists and dentists. Dental hygiene students, who provide dental hygiene care, have extensive education and training and have demonstrated competence in clinical services before being given permission to treat the public.

APPOINTMENT LENGTH

Patients should understand that this is an educational setting and that the student’s learning experiences and progress depend on the patient’s full cooperation. Appointment times vary each semester. The clinic is closed on weekends, holidays, and when the college is closed to the public. Because patient care is provided by students and faculty are required to evaluate each step, multiple appointments may be necessary to complete your dental hygiene care. Individual appointments range from one to three hours in length. Realizing everyone’s time is valuable, every effort is made to keep the number of appointments to a minimum. However, if it is difficult for you to come frequently and stay for the lengthy appointments, then you should seek care in the private sector.

BROKEN AND CANCELED APPOINTMENTS

The Dental Hygiene Clinic has appointment times established for when students are available to provide patient care. Since the goal is to provide dental hygiene care within a teaching/learning environment, patient cooperation is essential. Due to the limited hours of operation, student schedules and the time required for dental hygiene services, it is important that patients avoid canceling and/or breaking appointments. Patients are asked to give a minimum of 24-hour notice when unable to keep a scheduled appointment by calling the clinic at 843-574-6465.

If a patient cancels two appointments with less than 24-hour notice or breaks two appointments, that patient will lose the privilege of being treated in this clinic. A list of dentists in the community will be given to the patient so they can seek treatment.

ACCREDITATION

The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-secondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.
