Workforce Training Fiber Optics Courses Open For Registration

As noncredit Workforce Training (formerly Continuing Education) course offerings, you do not have to apply to become a TTC student in order to take these courses. You only need to register, pay and attend the course.

However, scholarships are available that cover all course fees for the three fiber optics courses listed below for qualified applicants. Scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course (CFOT)

Course Dates: Jan. 10-12, 2022; 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

If you are interested in learning about fiber optic networking and becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician, this introductory course is for you. Explore the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, including the cost of installation. Train and hone your skills through a combination of theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare you to take the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) test that is sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association (FOA) and administered on the final day of the course.
 
Go over industry standards governing Fiber To The Desk (FTTD), Fiber To The Home (FTTH), LAN/WAN fiber networks, and discover the basics of fusion and mechanical splicing. Learn how to identify fiber types; recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. Standards covered include: NECA/FOA-301-2004, EIA/TIA 568-B.3, ANSI/TIA/EIA 607-A, and NEC Article 770-50.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist: Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T)

Course Dates: Jan. 13-14, 2022; 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

This 16-hour program is designed to provide you advanced training for the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. Experience a general, easy to understand, approach to fiber optics testing standards that is light on theory and includes a considerable amount of hands-on training activities. Learn a variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber optics network testing and splicing and how to choose among them. The CFOS/T exam will be administered and graded at the end of class.

In this 85% hands-on course, explore the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of single and multimode fiber optics networks and gain a detailed overview and demonstration of various pieces of equipment used in testing and maintenance. Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-14(7)A, OTDR fundamentals and uses, OTDR vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and attenuation testing using the power source and light meter.

Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist (CFOS/S)

Course Dates: Jan. 15-16, 2022; 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

This intensely interactive, 16-hour program explains the importance of high performance splicing and further details the points necessary to achieve these splices. The depth of this presentation is much greater than most textbooks and provides you with background information about splicing that is very important. An overview of optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) functions and trace understanding is also provided during this presentation. The CROS/S exam will be administered and graded at the end of this course. 

Classroom activities (85% hands-on) provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of either single or multimode fiber optic cables. Inside or outside plant fiber optic cable types are utilized at the instructor's discretion during these hands-on sessions along with fiber optics enclosures and splice trays. You are responsible for successfully making and testing both mechanical and fusion splices.  In addition to the basic splicing activities outlined above, you must correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and enclosures.  You are also required to achieve a splice loss of less than 0.15 dB for all splices and demonstrate proficiency in the interpretation of splice loss using OTDR splice traces.

You will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the program, which is recognized by the US Department of Labor and is sanctioned by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA).
