Essential Functions Required of Students

The required functions are included but are not limited to the given list. The instructor must maintain lab and class safety. To protect students, staff, faculty, and property, the instructor may need to remove a student from a course if that student does not follow instructions, if the student does not demonstrate an understanding of safety, or if the student's conduct is determined to be unsafe by the instructor. Applicants and students should be able to perform these essential functions or with reasonable accommodations, such as the help of compensatory techniques and/or assistive devices, demonstrate the ability to become proficient in these essential functions. Essential Function Technical Standard Examples
Critical Thinking Ability sufficient for problem solving and formulating plans of action. Identify cause-effect relationships and use deductive reasoning in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical faults. Evaluate measurements, compile data, and draw sound conclusions
Interpersonal Skills Ability sufficient to effectively interact with individuals and groups from a variety of social, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. Work productively with individuals or as a member of a team. Establish rapport with peers, managers and customers
Communication Skills Communication abilities sufficient for effective interaction with others in spoken and written English Explain the design process, prepare and deliver oral and written reports, listen attentively.
Physical Ability, Motor Skills and Tactile Ability Ability sufficient to safely conduct industrial work with a normal range of motion and strength. Good eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity Install/remove large and small components. Work in constricted areas. Set up/calibrate/use lab equipment and test instruments
Safety Awareness Ability sufficient to protect self and others in a potentially hazardous environment. Understand the hazards of electrical shock and moving/rotating industrial machinery. Work safely on energized equipment. Stop work if unsure of procedure or degree of hazard involved. Comply with safety procedures and regulations. Demonstrate proper emergency responses.
Olfactory Ability Normal or corrected vision sufficient to observe and assess components and systems for proper operation. Normal color vision sufficient to discriminate color-codes of components and wiring. Inspect components for integrity and tightness. Observe motor rotation and electrical/mechanical connections. Select proper components and wiring by color-code.
Visual Ability Normal or corrected vision sufficient to observe and assess components and systems for proper operation. Hearing Ability Auditory ability sufficient to take verbal direction, and to audibly monitor industrial equipment and systems. Take verbal directions. Hear and heed fire, equipment, emergency, and environmental alarms. Listen for unusual/abnormal noises.
Professional Attitude and Demeanor Ability sufficient to present a professional image, maintain own physical and mental health, and demonstrate emotional stability Work long and irregular hours under stressful conditions.
