Essential Functions of Students Required for Success in Engineering Technology

The following is a list of essential skills and functions required to enter the courses in this program. The required functions are included in, but not limited to, the given list. The instructor must maintain lab and class safety. To protect students, staff, faculty and property, the instructor may need to remove a student from a course if that student does not follow instructions, if the student does not demonstrate an understanding of safety, or if the student’s conduct is determined to be unsafe by the instructor. Applicants and students should be able to perform these essential functions or with reasonable accommodations, such as the help of compensatory techniques and/or assistive devices, demonstrate the ability to become proficient in these essential functions.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking ability sufficient for problem solving and implementation of work tasks

Understand the design process from problem formulation to solution, (including mathematical methods), formulate and analyze alternative solutions, synthesize data, draw sound conclusions.

Interpersonal Skills

Abilities sufficient to interact with individuals and groups from a variety of social, emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds.

Establish rapport with colleagues, share ideas, function as a team member.

Communication Ability

Communication abilities sufficient for effective interaction with others in spoken and written English

Explain the design process, prepare and deliver oral and written reports, listen attentively, follow both written and oral instructions.

Physical Endurance

Remain continuously on task for several hours while standing, moving with heavy objects, sitting, lifting, and/or bending.

Carry equipment from the office to remote locations. Stand for long periods of time.

Mobility

Physical abilities sufficient to move from the office to remote sites and maneuver in tight places. Full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.

Work in and around laboratory equipment located in tight/difficult spaces. Walk while carrying equipment in offices and at work-sites.

[CET] add Walk over rough terrain carrying heavy equipment. Set up equipment that is 6 feet tall, requiring adjustments at the 5 foot level.

Motor Skills

Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective equipment operation.

Set up and use equipment. Operate equipment with necessary strength and dexterity. Ability to adjust small knobs, dials and switches correctly and accurately.

Adequate Height

Ability to reach and operate equipment at standing height.

Make adjustments to equipment, and view objects, meters and gauges at installed height of up to 5 feet and on bench tops/shelves.

Visual Ability

Normal or corrected visual ability sufficient to read analog and digital meters and gauges,

Read scales/dials/displays on measuring devices. View computer screens to produce and analyze data.

Hearing Ability

Auditory ability sufficient to take verbal direction and assess state of equipment.

Take verbal directions. Hear and heed fire alarms, equipment alarms, and component failures.

Tactile Ability

Tactile ability sufficient for physical assessment.

Determine excessive component or material heat by direct touch or by close proximity.

Olfactory Ability

Olfactory senses (smell) sufficient for maintaining environmental and equipment safety.

Distinguish smells which are contributory to assessing environmental (fire/chemical) safety and/or circuit or equipment hazards and failures.

Professional Attitude and Demeanor

Ability to present professional appearance and implement measures to maintain own physical and mental health, and emotional stability.

Work under stressful conditions and long hours. React calmly in emergency situations. Demonstrate flexibility. Show concern for others.
