Serving Up Student Support

After 33 years of service to Trident Technical College, Dr. Timothy Brown is retiring.

Dr. Brown began teaching at Trident Tech in 1990 as an adjunct instructor in Art History. He was hired as a full-time faculty member in 1993, served as the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and finishes his tenure as the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.

He brought a wealth of skills and dedication to the college and served as a mentor to hundreds of students.

With a desire to help students financially as well, Brown established the Thelma Wilson Brown Fund, after his mother, to assist students in the Culinary Arts Programs at TTC.

Because of her professional career in food service, Brown established the fund to honor her and to support students who cannot afford knife and pastry kits, tools that are much needed for their chosen profession in the food service industry.

“My mom was the first cafeteria manager at Mayo High School in Darlington, SC,” said Brown. “She was there through periods of segregation and desegregation.”

During her tenure, Mrs. Brown was responsible for overseeing the lunch program for thousands of high school students who grew up within that community, including her own children: Brown and his two sisters.

Though Mayo is currently an academic magnet school (AMS) for Darlington, historically it was a high school for African American students during segregation. Additionally, even after desegregation in 1970, the school maintained a predominantly African American student body.

Dr. Brown has made an impact on the lives of many students. We are grateful for his years of service and we wish him well in his next chapter!
