Purpose
Trident Technical College is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students. Hazing in any form is strictly prohibited. This policy outlines the definitions, prohibitions, procedures, and consequences related to hazing activities. This policy includes all student organizations recognized by Trident Technical College as well as any unofficial student group of two or more people operating as a club, society, association, organization, club sport team, or athletic team. Student groups and individual students should not condone or engage in any hazing activity.

Definition of Hazing
Hazing means any wrongful act by a student, or group of students, directed against another student, whether on or off campus, in connection with initiation into, affiliation with, or membership in any student organization, club, team, or group recognized by Trident Technical College, that:

1. Strikes, threatens, or causes bodily harm to a student;
2. Subjects a student to abusive, insulting, or ridiculous acts;
3. Frightens, shames, or subjects a student to personal indignity; or
4. Requires participation in activities that endanger mental or physical health or safety.

For purposes of this policy, consent of the student subjected to hazing is not a defense.

Hazing does not include:

• Reasonable and customary training, conditioning, or practice in officially sanctioned athletic or educational programs;
• Legitimate College-sponsored events that further the mission of the institution.

Reporting Procedures
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to report any suspected hazing activities immediately. Reports can be made through the following channels: Vice President for Student Services.

Investigation and Adjudication
Upon receiving a report of hazing, Trident Technical College will conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation in compliance with the disciplinary procedures outlined in the Trident Technical College Student Handbook or to SBTCE 3-2-106.1, the Student Code for the SC Technical College System.

If the investigation determines that hazing has occurred, the responsible individual/s or groups will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include:

• Warning or reprimand
• Probation
• Loss of privileges
• Suspension or expulsion from the college
• Revocation of organizational recognition or privileges

Support and Resources
Trident Technical College is committed to providing support to victims of hazing.  Support services are available to students through the college’s counseling office.
