NUMBER: 16-1-5 APPROVED DATE: 08-31-2000
BASED ON POLICY NUMBER AND TITLE: 16-1-0 ADMISSIONS
PURPOSE: To identify the means, requirements, restrictions, and processes that pertain to the awarding of advanced standing credit at Trident Technical College (TTC).
I. TYPES OF CREDIT
Students may fulfill up to 75% of program requirements through advanced standing credit; however, no more than 25% of program requirements are attainable through advanced standing test credit. Students may earn credit in any of the following ways:
A. COLLEGE TRANSFER CREDIT
Students may be considered to receive transfer credit for courses successfully completed at institutions accredited by one of the following United States accreditation agencies:
- Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC)
- Western Association of Schools and College (WSCUC)
- Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
- Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE)
- New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
- Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
- WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)
In awarding transfer credit, TTC considers equivalency of course content, quality, level, credit/contact hours, and program relevance. The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers' "Transfer Credit Practices of Educational Institutions" serves as a guide for evaluation of transfer credit. For transfer credit consideration, students must submit official transcripts of previous college course work to TTC's Admissions office and may be required to provide additional documentation. TTC awards transfer credit only when the grade is C- or higher or when the sending institution confirms that the grade (P for example) is equivalent to a C- or higher. Transfer credits will not be included in the calculation of GPA at TTC.
B. EXAMINATION CREDIT
Advanced standing through examination credit is subject to the following limitations:
- The college grants up to 16 semester credit hours (but no more than 25% of the program requirements) of CLEP or DANTES DSSTs credit.
- Students must submit an official score report to the Registrar's office.
- Students may retest three months after the original test date of a CLEP or DANTES DSSTs exam.
- TTC will not grant credit for a course previously attempted at TTC (including withdrawal). Awarded Advanced Standing credits will not affect a student's grade point average.
- TTC does not guarantee that Advanced Standing credit awarded for required TTC courses will transfer to other institutions.
C. ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Students may receive TTC credit for scores of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement examinations.
D. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
Students may receive TTC credit for scores of 4 or higher on International Baccalaureate examinations.
E. CLEP
TTC grants credit to students for selected College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations with satisfactory scores. Official score reports must be on file in the Registrar's office for a student to receive credit. Students have the option of retesting a CLEP exam three months after the original test date.
F. DANTES
TTC grants credit to students for selected Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES DSSTs) with satisfactory scores. Official score reports must be on file in the Registrar's office prior to granting credit. Students have the option of retesting a DANTES exam three months after the original test date.
G. MILITARY
TTC grants credit for selected formal military coursework and training (when applicable to the curriculum). TTC uses the credit recommendations of the American Council of Education's Guide for the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services to evaluate both military classroom and experiential training.
H. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Refer to TTC Procedure 16-1-9, "Credit Through Experiential Learning."
II. ADVANCED STANDING PROCESS
III. GRADING
TTC does not compute transfer hours or grades in the student's grade point average (GPA). Therefore, the college accepts all transfer students in good standing, without regard to records of disciplinary or academic standing at the previous institution(s).
IV. LIMITATIONS
TTC requires that all transfer students meet the following graduation residency standards:
- The student must complete a minimum of 25% of the program requirements at TTC.
- The student must complete a minimum of 25% of the program requirements at TTC.
