Industrial maintenance mechanics repair and maintain commercial or industrial machinery.
Many industrial maintenance mechanics are skilled in vibration analysis, electrical
troubleshooting, drive system repair and hydraulic/pneumatic system troubleshooting
and repair. Some general maintenance mechanics troubleshoot and repair heating and
air conditioning systems and electrical control systems as well as complete preventive
maintenance on many types of machinery.
What characteristics and skills do I need to work in this field?
It is not surprising that troubleshooting skills are important in this field, since
industrial maintenance mechanics must observe and properly diagnose and fix problems.
Technical skills are needed to work with the diagnostic equipment. Manual dexterity
and mechanical skills, such as reassembling large machines, are essential.
Where can I work?
Most industrial maintenance mechanics work in plants, factories, utilities and construction
sites. General maintenance mechanics work in hotels, manufacturing plants, hospitals
and government agencies, just to name a few.
