What can I do in graphic design?
Visual arts play a role in nearly every business and every area of our lives – from
advertisements to mobile and Web design to photography and everything in between.
Vibrant careers include professional artists, designers and photographers working
in diverse creative fields such as graphic design, animation/game design, Web/digital
media, illustration, publishing, photography, print, marketing and advertising.
What characteristics and skills do I need to work in this field?
Although they might seem at opposite ends of the spectrum, both interpersonal and
computer skills are a must in this field. Patience, creativity, attention to detail
and good communication skills also are important qualities.
Depending on interests and career goals, additional skills may be necessary. For example,
computer game designers need problem-solving skills, a good grasp of mathematics,
particularly geometry, and a healthy understanding of computer databases. Those interested
in online media production need to be able to follow a task through to its conclusion
(shooting video, editing it then posting to the Web) while meeting the deadlines presented
by today’s rapid news cycle.
Where can I work?
Visual arts careers are available in nearly all job sectors within corporations, colleges
and universities, software development companies, nonprofit agencies, advertising
firms, media newsrooms, publishing and printing firms, and more. Generally these positions
are office-based, but on-location projects are not uncommon.
