What can I do in electrical and automated technologies?
Construction electricians install the electrical wiring, devices, fixtures and machinery
in residential, commercial and industrial locations in accordance with the National
Electrical Code. Industrial maintenance electricians perform preventative maintenance,
diagnostic testing, casualty analysis and corrective maintenance on electrical/electronic
equipment and systems such as transformers, electromechanical controls, motors, variable
speed drives and programmable logic controllers. Automated and process control systems
technicians install, test, align, troubleshoot and repair technically challenging
integrated control systems that include electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic components
and their associated sensors and instrumentation.
What characteristics and skills do I need to work in this field?
Problem solving and troubleshooting are an important part of this field, so critical
thinking skills are a must. You should also have good eye-hand coordination and finger
dexterity as well as a normal range of motion and strength to conduct industrial work.
Safety awareness is also very important.
