F-1 Visa Students
How to Obtain an F-1 Visa
To become an F-1 student, you need a Form I-20, issued by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school. The Form I-20 has your unique SEVIS ID number.
Once you have your I-20, follow these steps:
- Pay the SEVIS Fee:
- You can pay the fee online at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website or through Western Union Quick Pay.
- You'll need your SEVIS ID number from the I-20.
- Be sure to print a receipt showing that you've paid the SEVIS I-901 fee.
- Schedule a Visa Appointment:
- Make an appointment with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for the F-1 visa.
- If you're from a visa-exempt country like Canada or Bermuda, apply for admission at a U.S. Port of Entry (POE) instead.
- Entry to the U.S.:
- If your F-1 visa is approved, you can enter the U.S. through a Port of Entry up to 30 days before the start date listed on your Form I-20.
- If Your Visa is Denied:
- Follow any instructions given by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Contact the Admissions office at 843-574-6325 or email linda.martinez@tridenttech.edu.
F-1 visa applicants must attend an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. During the interview, you'll need to provide the following documents:
- Acceptance Letter from the U.S. school
- Form I-20: Ensure all three pages are read, signed and dated.
- Affidavit of Financial Support (Form I-134)
- Notarized Bank Statement showing sufficient funds
- Tuition Deposit Receipt
- SEVIS I-901 Fee Receipt: All F-1 visa applicants must pay the visa application fee (MRV), but only the principal F-1 student must pay the SEVIS fee.
- Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your stay in the U.S.
- DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Application Receipt
Note: Different students may be asked different questions or required to submit additional documents depending on their personal and academic situations.
Be Prepared to Provide:
- Transcripts and diplomas from previous schools
- Scores from required tests like TOEFL, SAT, ACT or placement tests
- Financial evidence that shows that the student or sponsor has sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses during the period of intended study (This could include income tax documents, original bank statements, business licenses, etc.) showing sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.
- Reason for studying in the U.S. and why you chose your specific program and institution
Applicants with Dependents
If you're applying with a spouse and/or child(ren):
- Provide proof of relationship (marriage and birth certificates)
- It's preferred that families apply for F-1 and F-2 visas together. If applying separately, dependents should bring a copy of the student's visa and passport, along with the required documents.
Additional Screening
- During the interview, an ink-free fingerprint scan will be taken.
- Some applicants may need additional screening and will be notified if required.
Non-Immigrant Intent
- To qualify for a student visa, applicants must show they meet the requirements under U.S. immigration law sections 101(a)(15)(B), (F) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. One key requirement is demonstrating non-immigrant intent, meaning the applicant intends to stay in the U.S. temporarily and return home afterward.
- To prove this, applicants must show that they have strong ties to their home country—things
like:
- A job or career prospects
- A home or property
- Social and family connections
- Financial ties, like a bank account
- During the visa interview, consular officers will review each application individually, considering your personal, professional and family situation. They'll look at your intentions, your family's circumstances and your long-term plans back in your home country. Younger applicants, like students, may have fewer ties but are still considered carefully.
- For more details on non-immigrant visas, visit the Department of State (DOS) website.
For comprehensive information on procedures for traveling and arriving in the United States, visit Study in the States. Here is what international students can expect when arriving at a U.S. Port of Entry (POE).
Plan Your Arrival
You cannot enter the U.S. more than 30 days before your program's start date, which is listed on your SEVIS I-20 form.
Always Hand-Carry Your Documents
Keep these documents with you, not in your checked baggage:
- Passport (valid for at least six months beyond your stay)
- SEVIS Form I-20
- Additionally, it's a good idea to carry:
- Evidence of financial resources (bank statements, sponsor letter)
- Student status documents (acceptance letter, recent tuition receipts, transcripts)
- SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-797)
- Designated School Official (DSO) contact information
Complete Your Entry Paperwork
- If arriving by Air: You will receive a Customs Declaration Form (CF-6059) from flight attendants to complete before landing.
- If arriving By Land or Sea: The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer at the POE will provide the Customs Declaration Form (CF-6059) upon your arrival.
At the Port of Entry
Once you arrive, go to the terminal for incoming passengers. Present these documents to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer:
- Passport
- SEVIS Form I-20
- Customs Declaration Form (CF-6059)
All visitors entering the United States must state their reason for wishing to enter the country. You will also be asked to provide information about your destination. It is important that you tell the CBP Officer that you will be a student. Be prepared to include the name and address of the school program where you will enroll/participate. Once your inspection is successfully completed, the inspecting officer will stamp your passport for duration of status ("D/S").
Secondary Inspection
If there are issues verifying your information or you are missing documents, you may be sent to secondary inspection. This is where the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers will check further details about your status. If the CBP Officer needs to verify information with your school or program, we strongly recommend that you have the name and telephone number of the DSO at your school. In the event you arrive during non-business hours (evening, weekends, holidays), you can call 843-574-6053 (Double Check on this number - public safety non-emergency).
In case of issues, a Notice to Student or Exchange Visitor Form (I-515A) might be issued, allowing temporary admission. Work with your school to submit the required documents promptly.
After Entering the U.S.
Upon arrival, you must:
- Report to your school within 30 days of the date on your SEVIS I-20 form.
- Contact your DSO to schedule an appointment and register for classes.
Note: Failure to do this could lead to serious issues with your status.
