Application Process for Other Visa Types

What is a non-immigrant visa? A non-immigrant visa is a temporary immigration document that allows citizens of foreign countries to enter the U.S. for specific purposes such as studying, working or tourism. The visa type the holder obtains determines what the holder is allowed to do while in the U.S. and is based on the declared primary purpose for entering the United States. Trident Technical College (TTC) accepts non-immigrants already in the U.S. with visas other than F-1, provided that the visa allows studying without restrictions and visa obligations are met.

To find out whether your current visa status allows you to study, please view Non-immigrants: Who can Study?, a document published by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

Important Information

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the U.S. *Unless you are under a specific non-immigrant status that prevents renewal.
  • The I-94 Form can be accessed at http://www.cbp.gov/I94.
  • While some visas allow studying in the U.S., there are certain types of visas that allow incidental study. Enrollment is incidental (secondary) to your primary objective. You must continue to pursue your program objectives as listed on your DS-2019.
  • Spouses and children on dependent visas cannot stay in the U.S. beyond the visa holder’s approved period to continue studies. Children lose dependent status at age 21 and must leave the U.S. or apply for a change of status before their 21st birthday.
  • TTC assesses tuition and fees according to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. While there are specific visas that allow for in-state tuition and fees, there are visas and non-immigrant statuses that will not qualify for in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees will be assessed. See Determination of Rates of Tuition and Fees for more information.

The Office of International Admissions monitors the legal status and enrollment of all international students by placing a hold on a student's account, which will prevent the student from registering for or withdrawing from classes. You may call 843-574-6325 or email linda.martinez@tridenttech.edu to make an appointment should you have any questions.

Foreign nationals who have been granted the privilege of living and working permanently in the United States are considered Permanent Residents. • Submit Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) copy of front and back, Social Security Card, Passport, State-Issued ID.

    Important Information

    • The Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) is issued to all permanent residents as evidence of their legal status in the U.S. It must always be in your possession.
    • The card is valid for 10 years and must be renewed before it expires. However, your permanent resident status does not expire with the card—only the card itself needs to be renewed.
    • Conditional permanent residents are issued a card valid for two years. To maintain permanent resident status, you must file a petition to remove the conditions within 90 days before the card expires. The conditional card cannot be renewed; the condition must be removed to avoid losing permanent resident status.
    • Employment and Identification:
      • The Permanent Resident Card can be used to prove employment eligibility when completing a Form I-9 for a new employer.
      • It can also be used to apply for a Social Security Card and a State-Issued Driver’s License.
    • South Carolina Residency
      • In most cases, if your Permanent Resident status is still pending, you do not qualify for in-state tuition and fees. Being a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States does not automatically make you a resident of South Carolina for tuition and fee purposes. For more information see the Residency website.

The Office of International Admissions monitors the expiration date of your Permanent Resident Card. One semester before the expiration date on your Permanent Resident Card, a hold will be placed on your student account, which will prevent you from registering for or withdrawing from classes. Therefore, know when your card will expire and renew it on time. Contact the international admissions coordinator at 843-574-6325 or linda.martinez@tridenttech.edu if you have a hold on your account and need to provide documentation about your status.

When you apply for U.S. citizenship and you become a U.S. citizen, please submit a copy of your Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-551)/U.S. Passport. Your student file will then be removed from the Office of International Admissions and any hold will be removed.

Applicants that are under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals will be accepted under out-of-state residency classification. *Due to state and federal licensing requirements there are some programs of study that DACA students are not eligible for. We recommend all DACA students to meet with our International Admissions Coordinator while they are selecting their program of study.
