What can I do in computer programming?
Information systems managers, sometimes called information technology (IT) managers
or IT project managers, plan, coordinate and direct computer-related activities for
an organization. They help determine the information technology goals of an organization
and are responsible for implementing computer systems to meet those goals.
What characteristics and skills do I need to work in this field?
Working in information systems fields requires professionals to be excellent communicators,
as well as have a strong interest in technical details. Depending on the career path
taken, careers in information systems require fluency in programming languages such
as JavaScript, Java, C#, jQuery, PHP, SQL, CSS and HTML. Obtaining a broad overview
of different technologies, such as help desk, computer programming, e-commerce, database
systems, networking, cybersecurity, etc., is helpful across all areas of the career.
Where can I work?
Individuals who pursue information systems careers can work in varied settings, including
local companies, corporations, nonprofit agencies, educational institutions, and government
agencies.
What does Trident Technical College offer?
Trident Technical College has numerous technology courses that provide students with
a solid foundation in the information technology career field. The Information Systems
program offers an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.), a Computer Technology degree.
From that degree, students choose either the Information Systems Specialist or Computer
Programming degree path to concentrate on their area of focus. This allows an introduction
to different technologies, such as computer programming, web development, database
systems, networking, etc. This provides students with a broad view of computer technology
for which they have both an aptitude and interest in.
Once students determine their interest, this degree has four elective classes where
they can continue training in the chosen technology. For example, students interested
in learning Microsoft Office programs can apply the additional courses needed to complete
the Business Applications Solution Specialist certificate.
Other students might decide that database technology is where they want to excel.
They can use the electives to earn a Database Administrator certificate and learn
more about database design and management.
Even if students decide they want to master computer programming, this degree will
allow them to use the four electives to master computer and/or internet programming
certificates. Moreover, students pursuing the Information Systems paths may want to
earn certificates toward Cisco/CompTIA, cybersecurity, network security, Linux and
cloud computing.
