NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Trident Technical College has been awarded continued funding for two longstanding federal TRIO programs that help students and adults overcome barriers to higher education and career success.
The U.S. Department of Education has renewed funding for the college's Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) programs. The annual awards total more than $1.17 million, including $490,000 for Talent Search and $681,520 for Educational Opportunity Center.
These programs provide guidance, support and resources to help participants pursue educational opportunities, complete academic goals and prepare for successful careers.
"These federal investments allow Trident Technical College to continue expanding educational opportunities for individuals who may face barriers to higher education," said Dr. Vicky Wood, president of Trident Technical College. "For decades, the Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Center programs have helped residents throughout our region gain the knowledge and skills needed to enter the local workforce, support the local economy and strengthen our community."
The college has a long history of administering both programs. Trident Tech has operated the Educational Opportunity Center since 1979 and the Talent Search program since 1989, assisting generations of students and adult learners across the Lowcountry.
The Educational Opportunity Center serves low-income and first-generation adults throughout Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. Through individualized counseling and guidance, participants receive assistance with GED completion, college admissions, career exploration, financial literacy, FAFSA completion and financial aid navigation. The program serves at least 2,434 adults annually and works closely with community partners, including adult education programs, nonprofit organizations, workforce agencies and educational institutions.
Talent Search serves middle and high school students throughout Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties by helping them prepare for and succeed in higher education. The program provides academic advising, career exploration, college planning assistance, financial aid and FAFSA guidance, campus visits and enrichment opportunities designed to encourage high school completion and postsecondary enrollment. Through personalized support, Talent Search helps students identify educational pathways that align with their goals and aspirations.
Together, the two federally funded programs reflect Trident Technical College's commitment to expanding access to education and creating pathways to economic mobility for individuals and families throughout the region.
