Pharmacy Technician Program
The Pharmacy Technician Program prepares students to perform a variety of technical duties related to the preparation and dispensing of medication under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Students must hold current certification in American Heart Association BLS/CPR. There is a mandatory Orientation that all students must attend, bring copies of their prerequisites, on Jan 9, bldg 630/226, 9:00am-12:00 noon. This 9-month hybrid course is held: online, an on-campus lab, and an off-campus clinical practice. The on-campus lab has an option: students will choose; Lab A held on Mon 9am-3:30pm, OR Lab B held on Tues & Thur, 9am-12noon. This is discussed further at the Orientation. The clinical portion for all students is in the Summer for eight-weeks, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm. See schedule below. Upon completion of this program, students will be eligible to sit for national pharmacy technician certification examinations to earn the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential and apply to become a State Certified Pharmacy Technician with the SC Board of Pharmacy. Prerequisites: Passing score on Pharmacy Technician specific math placement test. See below bulleted line. Laptop with internet access, camera, and microphone. Uniform: grey scrub top and bottom, clean athletic shoes, for lab and clinical work. Vaccinations; 2-step PPD, Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tetanus, Meningococcal, Flu. Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)
Students will learn microbiology, medical terminology, bacterial growth and contaminants, and the chemicals used to destroy organisms on surgical instruments. Learn to decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments. Technicians are exposed to blood, bacteria, viruses, and body tissues while cleaning and sterilizing contaminated instruments from all areas of the hospital. As a sterile process technician, you work alongside healthcare professionals with supervision in a central sterile processing department in hospitals. This program teaches towards the national certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association. The program meets 2 evenings per week on-campus, followed by a 2-week, or 80 hour, clinical externship in a hospital central sterile department. The clinical externship is held Monday thru Friday at varying hours. This program is fast-paced and concentrated, and requires a great deal of reading, memorization and understanding. Students must attend the mandatory Orientation on the start date, or they cannot proceed in the course. Failure to attend the orientation will forfeit the Scholarship. This program has a strict attendance policy.
