Associate in Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant

75 Credit Hours

The Physical Therapist Assistant program prepares students to implement physical therapy interventions, including therapeutic exercises, functional training and physical modalities such as electrotherapy and ultrasound, as well as providing instruction in exercise, proper body mechanics and other injury prevention and wellness topics. Additional duties include reimbursement responsibilities, documentation and continuing education. PTAs work under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. Graduates become licensed by passing the National Physical Therapy Exam for Physical Therapist Assistants.

Applicants will be admitted to this program on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis. Applicants are considered to be qualified for admission to the next available class when they meet all college and program requirements. Qualified applicants will be notified via my.tridenttech.edu email indicating the year that they have been admitted. Classes in this program begin Summer Semester.

In addition to meeting the college's general admission requirements, including submission of official high school and college transcripts, APPLICANTS TO THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT PROGRAM MUST COMPLETE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Complete the online Health Sciences Application through the TTC Portal.
  2. Provide proof that all general education courses (prerequisite courses) required in the Physical Therapist Assistant program have been completed.
    1. These courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
    2. Achieve a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA in the required science (BIO 210 and BIO 211), math (either MAT 120 or MAT 110), and English (ENG 101) courses.
  3. Laboratory science courses must have been taken within five years of acceptance into the program.
  4. The PTA Program has a Repeat Rule regarding admissions: No more than four of the eight prerequisite courses may be attempted more than two times.
  5. Complete the Information Session on the TTC Portal page for Physical Therapist Assistant and achieve a score of 100% on the online quiz following the session to verify the information was reviewed and understood.
  6. Submit Observation Forms to HealthSciencesAdmissions@tridenttech.edu documenting a minimum of 40 hours spent in a physical therapy facility. While all 40 hours may be completed in a hospital, it is preferred that the observation hours be divided between hospital and nonhospital facilities, with a minimum of 20 hours in an in-patient acute-care or acute rehab hospital. The applicant is responsible for the observation experience. Forms may be found on the TTC PTA webpage and PTA Portal page.
  7. Submit a Statement of Completion form online. The link to the form can be found on
    the Health Sciences webpage.

General Admission Procedures for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program

  1. Students will be required to provide a completed, current Health Sciences – Student Health Record including all immunizations and titers, TB (PPD) tests, as well as current Healthcare Provider CPR certification, major medical insurance and medical professional liability coverage.
  2. Students will be notified by my.tridenttech.edu email the date and time of the mandatory program orientation. Failure to attend will result in forfeiture of seat in the program.
    Note: Falsification of any information submitted     will make a student ineligible for admission to or continuation in the Physical Therapist Assistant program.

Course  Progression
To progress to the next Physical Therapist Assistant term/semester, the student must complete all Physical Therapist Assistant courses with a grade of C or better. The student must earn a grade of satisfactory on the final professional development evaluation each semester of the program.

Note: Students are responsible for transportation, meals and housing expenses during clinical rotations.
