Medical Coding Certificate Programs

The medical coding field is growing faster than average due to mandatory electronic health records, health information management changes, and the Affordable Healthcare Act.

Trident Tech offers three continuing education certificate programs in medical coding: Certified Professional Coder (CPC)Coding Specialist (CS) and Coding for Health Care Professionals (CHCP). The CS and CPC programs are for those without prior health care education and training. The CHCP is for health care professionals (nurses, health care administrators and paramedics) to add to their skill set and move into a coding career.

The coding specialist reviews and analyzes health records to identify diagnoses and procedures for billing insurance and Medicare. The coding specialist is responsible for translating diagnostic and procedural information used by health care providers into coded form for medical reimbursement purposes. The greater the expertise of the coder the greater reimbursement to a health care facility.

To become a certified professional coder, learn the principles and guidelines for assigning the appropriate medical codes to diagnostic conditions and medical procedures. Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and HIPAA guidelines also are included. The on-campus program prepares students for a career working as a certified coder in an outpatient medical office. Students that complete the Medical Office Specialist (MOS) program are uniquely qualified to enter this program, by entering the second half of the program which teaches the core coding courses. This portion would be three months of training at half of the tuition fee.

Employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics).

The median annual wage for medical records and health information technicians was $37,110 in May 2015 (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics).
