Certified Professional Billing and Coding (CPB)

Certified Professional Billers (CPB) know patient health insurance and government programs. CPBs know medical terminology and coding for claim processing. In this high-demand, online program, students learn health insurance coverages and how to maintain all aspects of the revenue cycle in medical offices and hospitals.

Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

Learn the principles and guidelines for assigning the appropriate medical codes to diagnostic conditions and medical procedures as a certified professional coder. Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and HIPAA guidelines also are included. The remote online and live program prepares students for a career working as a certified coder in an outpatient medical office. Certification: Certified Professional Coder exam through American Academy of Professional Coders; Books not included (approximately $400)

Coding for Health Care Professionals (CHCP)

This online coding for health care professionals (nurses, health care administrators, paramedics) program allows participants to add to their skillsets and move into coding careers. The coding field is growing faster than average due to mandatory electronic health records, health information management changes and the Affordable Care Act. Certification: Certified Coding Associate exam through American Health Information Management Association and Certified Professional Coder exam through American Academy of Professional Coders

Coding Specialist (CS)

The coding specialist reviews and analyzes health records to identify diagnoses and procedures for billing insurance and Medicare. The coding specialist is responsible for translating diagnostic and procedural information used by health care providers into coded form for medical reimbursement purposes. The greater the expertise of the coder the greater reimbursement to a health care facility. Certification: Certified Coding Associate exam through American Health Information Management Association and Certified Professional Coder exam through American Academy of Professional Coders

Medical Office Specialist (MOS)

Administrative front-office workers are the backbone of any successful medical facility. In this online course, you develop the necessary skills to work in a medical office, such as understanding electronic health records, scheduling, insurance verification and more. Students must have reliable internet access as the program is delivered online. Externships are to be completed online in this program; no vaccines needed. Students who successfully complete the MOS program are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS) national certification given by the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Medical Scribe

Assist physicians during patient interactions by recording information in electronic health records (E.H.R) in real-time. Medical scribes increase efficiency for medical offices with the knowledge and experience of medical terminology, anatomy, HIPAA regulations, and E.H.R. to record patient information, test results, and medications so the physician can spend more time communicating with the patient. There is a high demand for trained medical scribes in many local health care practices in the Charleston area. This online program is instructor-led and eight weeks long. Book information is provided on the first-day login (online cost approx. $200).

Medical Terminology

Master the medical vocabulary and terms used in allied health and medical careers in this online course. The course covers word parts, root words, general application, abbreviations, medical terminology and body systems. Medical terminology is the basis needed for all proper coding.

 

Note: This course is a prerequisite for many of Continuing Education's Health Information Management programs, so the schedules for Medical Terminology courses are set to complement those programs. Individual class names include a reference to the program it is intended to complement (example: Medical Terminology for CPC is scheduled to finish a few days before a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) class starts).
