Artisan Soap Making: Join Denise Mungin of ‘GIN Soap Company and learn the art and craft of making natural artisan soaps at home. Discuss how to personalize your homemade soaps. Choose a scent oil and make your own bar in class. 

 

Blackout Poetry: Grab a friend and come learn the written and visual techniques for creating this new art form. Originating from pages of old books or articles cut from a newspaper, the poet artist brings new meaning and visual life to the printed words.

 

Charcoal Drawing Techniques: Through a combination of demonstration and hands-on activities, you create a pleasing still life using charcoal as your medium. Learn about composition, shading and contour line in this beginner’s class. 

 

Home Recording Studio Setup: Learn to set up an entry-level recording studio that fits within your budget and can easily adapt as your needs change.  Understand the basic principles of audio recording and identify the appropriate equipment for your situation and needs.

 

Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop: Laura Lloyd Fontaine leads a weekend plein air oil painting workshop for artists of all experience levels. Participants meet at Laura’s studio, then head outside to render a beautiful Ashley River marsh landscape. 

 

Podcast Production: Learn the basics of producing your own podcast.  The class will discuss basic equipment and software needed to record and produce a podcast. Instructor will also offer guidance for how to make your podcast available online.

 

Script to Screen: Introduction to Filmmaking: Learn the basic steps of producing a film from analyzing a screenplay, understanding film terminology and crew responsibilities, appreciating the filmmaking process, to producing a short film on a shoestring budget.

 

Soy Candle Making: Join Denise Mungin of ‘GIN Soap Company and learn to make custom candles for gifts or for your own home. Enjoy the light fragrance and gentle glow of candlelight throughout the year. Make an all-natural soy candle to take home.

 

Sweetgrass Creations: Basket Making: Learn the history and art of weaving beautiful sweetgrass baskets unique to the Gullah people of the Lowcountry from Vera Manigault, innovator of trademarked Colorful Baskets. Make a natural color creation to take home.

 

Zentangle Art: Zentangle is the art of creating patterned drawings that are both structured and abstract. This creative process is a form of artistic meditation that anyone can do and the method of creation is just as important as the visual result.

Au Pairs

Au pairs have two options for exploring the Lowcountry; three education credits are awarded per class. In Natural Beauty, au pairs stroll cultivated gardens, sample farm-to-table cuisine, interact with local artisans and learn about wildlife while experiencing the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. In Sights and Sounds, Spoleto Festival USA takes center stage. Au pairs enjoy performances by internationally renowned artists and learn about Charleston’s history, culture and world famous cuisine.
