The increase in internet connectivity, the internet of things, and our nation’s advanced technological state have created a critical need for cybersecurity talent in the workforce. There are currently more jobs available than qualified workers and the gap is only expected to grow. Trident Technical College’s Center for Cybersecurity provides students and the community with cybersecurity resources as well as academic and professional development opportunities.
In 2016, TTC was awarded an Office of Naval Research grant for the project period of August 2017-July 2020. The project, titled Supporting Education in Cybersecurity for Undergraduates through Resources and Engagement (Cyber SECURE), was designed to strengthen the talent pipeline for cybersecurity professionals across the state of South Carolina. This is being accomplished through curriculum development, including an Associate in Applied Science in Cybersecurity degree, strengthened connections with four-year institutions, new and strengthened relationships with industry partners, and outreach activities targeting underrepresented populations in STEM fields. TTC will increase the number of diverse individuals who are interested in, prepared for, and knowledgeable about the growing field of cybersecurity, a critical Naval STEM priority.
Confirming its stature as a national leader in cybersecurity education, TTC was designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Two-Year Education in July 2019 through the academic year 2024. TTC is the first two-year college to receive this designation in South Carolina.
