Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D. Classes)

What is R.A.D.?

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques.  It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.  R.A.D. is not a martial arts program.  Our courses are taught by certified R.A.D. instructors and provide you with a workbook/reference manual.  This manual outlines the entire physical defense program for reference and continuous personal growth.  The R.A.D. System of Basic Physical Defense is currently being taught at many Colleges and Universities.  The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of R.A.D.'s tactics, solid research, and unique teaching methodology. Please see more information on R.A.D.'s webpage:  http://www.rad-systems.com/.

The next 12-hour series* of R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense classes will be held on February 25, February 27, March 4 and March 6, 2013 between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at Palmer Campus in room 218.

This free series of R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense is offered to TTC students, faculty, and staff (women who are age 16 or older). For more information, or to register for the series of classes, please call TTC’s Department of Public Safety at 843.574.6053 or email the R.A.D. Coordinator, Officer Mike H. Patterson at mike.h.patterson@tridenttech.edu.

*Students are required to attend all four nights in order to receive full benefit of the program and to receive completion verification by a R.A.D. instructor.

FAQ's:

  • Why is this course only available for women?  The R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense is designed only for women, age 16 years or older.  R.A.D. actually offers several different courses, to include a course for men and a course for "kids", but instructors must be certified through R.A.D. to teach these additional courses.  At this time, TTC is only able to offer the R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense course.
  • Do I need any prior experience to attend this class? Do I need to be in top physical shape to participate? No. This program is designed for the average woman with no previous experience or background in physical training. Any individual physical limitations may be discussed in private with an instructor on the first night, or any time during the course.
  • Do I have to attend all four classes/nights?  Upon successful completion of all four classes, instructors will sign the student’s manual.  This allows the student to attend future R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense classes (for refresher training) held anywhere in the United States for free.  Because this is a short course, and skills are taught in progressive order, attendance in all four classes is highly encouraged.  Instructors have the discretion to discontinue a student's participation in the course if the student has missed too much material.  However, students in this situation are allowed to return to the next offered course.
  • What do I need to wear or bring to class each night?  Students should wear comfortable "gym" clothes and closed toed shoes (like sneakers).  Students will be asked to remove any jewelry and watches that may cause injuries to themselves and others, or may become damaged during training.  Restroom and water breaks will be given frequently in class, but students may also want to bring bottled water.
  • Can a non-TTC student or employee attend this course with me?  Since this course is offered for the benefit of TTC students and employees, we reserve available slots for those women first.  However, if there is space available, we will be glad to register non-TTC women on a first-come basis.  Please contact the R.A.D. Coordinator for more information.
