A Letter From Dr. Thornley
As midterm to Fall Semester approaches, I would like to take the time to share some important news with you about Fall Semester 2014.
For those of you who will be at Trident Tech next academic year - in 2014-15 - I want you to be aware of a transformation beginning next fall. Starting Fall Semester 2014, the college is moving to a compressed course schedule. Fall and Spring Semesters will each be divided into two 7-week terms with a one-week break between terms. Full-time students taking 12 to 15 hours will attend about half of their courses during each 7-week term.
Why are we making this change? The answer: student success. Our own research and a body of national research show that students are more successful in compressed courses. By successful, we mean that a higher percentage of students finish with grades of A, B, C or SC (satisfactory) in compressed courses than in courses taught across a full semester.
The compressed course schedule offers other benefits to you:
- Your attention is focused on fewer courses at a time. Instead of having homework for four different subjects, you might have only two at a time.
- The 7-week term helps you maintain your academic focus.
- This format allows for more faculty/student engagement and increased opportunities for learning-centered activities.
All current forms of financial aid will continue to be available, as long as you meet eligibility requirements. Refunds will be issued during each 7-week term, based on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in that term, not once per semester as they are now during Fall and Spring Semesters. The Financial Aid office is available to assist with your individual questions.
Information about this transformation is housed at www.tridenttech.edu/newschedule.htm. I encourage you to visit this Web page to read answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and you can even enter your own questions into the FAQ manager. Announcements about information sessions and workshops for success strategies will be announced on this Web page and on social media, so "like" Trident Technical College on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Google+ to stay current.
Please take time to learn how this transformation will affect you when it begins in Fall Semester 2014.
