Literature Online is updated monthly. Use the features under Quick Search, Search, and Browse in the left hand column to find recent critical information on an author and his/her works.
QUICK SEARCH
Enter the author's last name, first name (e.g., twain, mark) or a theme (e.g., rhetoric) to find full-text biographical information, journal articles, reference material and websites relevant to the author or theme.
SEARCH
AUTHORS:
- Select Authors under Search, or Select from a list of authors in the database.
- Enter the author's name (last name, first name) and click on Search.
- Click on the author's name to view Criticism (full text journal articles and citations); Bibliography of the author's works; Biography of the author's life and criticism of his works; and Websites related to the author and his works.
- Mark, download to disk or print your selections.
Search--Authors also enables you to find authors:
Living at a specific time, e.g., between 1940-1950 and of a specific gender, e.g., male and/or female. By Nationality. Enter a nationality, or, Select from a list , e.g., Ghanian (alphabetical) and Search. By Ethnicity. Enter an ethnic group, or, Select from a list, e.g., Native American and Search. By Literary Movement. Enter a movement, or, Select from a list, e.g., American Romanticism. By Literary Period. Enter a period, or, Select from a list, e.g., Renaissance Period.
CRITICISM:
- Select Criticism under Search.
This is an advanced search mode. Recommended: select Search in : Full text only.
- Enter a keyword, or "Select from a list" : Title keyword, Subject or Author, Author/Reviewer, Publication Details; Journal title, Publication years to search. Limit to: All resources, or, select from Articles, Books, etc.
- Click Search.
Note: Searches may be combined, e.g., Title keyword: Shakespeare; Subject: Hamlet; Limit to: Articles. Results will be full text literary criticism of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
REFERENCE:
- Select Reference under Search.
- Enter a keyword, subject (or Select from a list), or author (or Select from a list).
- Select the reference publication, e.g., All or Biographies, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias.
Note: This search is useful for explanations of themes, e.g., abjection.
KNOWLEDGE NOTES STUDENT GUIDES:
Under Publication, select Knowledge notes student guides, then click Search for an alphabetical list of frequently studied authors and titles. This search results in an overview of the author, a bibliography of his/her works, a discussion of the story plot, style, theme/s, highlights, and more.
Note: This is very useful for the critical analysis of a particular author or title.
WEB SITES:
- Select Web Sites under Search.
- Type in a keyword, title, author, literary movement, or period.
- Click Search to find web sites related to your entry.
BROWSE
COMPLETE CONTENTS:
- Select Complete Contents under Browse to view all resources used in the Literature Online database. Click on an underlined link to view complete contents in that area, e.g., criticism, full text journals, authors, etc.
FULL-TEXT JOURNALS:
- Select Full-Text Journals under Browse to view an alphabetical list of journal titles.
- Click on the corresponding alphabet for your journal title.
- Click on your journal title to view contents of volumes and issues available in the database.
- Download your articles to disk or email them to yourself.
AUTHOR INDEX:
- Select Author Index under Browse to view a list of authors by Period, Nationality, Literary Movement, Ethnicity, Gender, or, an A-Z list of all authors available in the database.
- Mark and select to view information available on each author, e.g., full-text criticism, biography, web sites, etc.

Remember: You can download (save) to disk or email your results to yourself.
