The Patrick E. Ringwald Memorial Culinary Garden

THE PATRICK E. RINGWALD MEMORIAL CULINARY GARDEN.

Patrick E. Ringwald is remembered as a widely respected and engaged member of Charleston’s food and beverage community. After his death in 2003, family, friends and colleagues established the Patrick E. Ringwald Memorial Foundation to support hospitality and culinary training in the Lowcountry.

In 2004, the Ringwald Foundation approached Trident Technical College with a proposal to design and install a culinary garden at the College’s Culinary Institute of Charleston. TTC readily accepted this unique opportunity to provide its culinary students with hands-on experience in selecting, growing and harvesting  herbs and produce to use in their programs of study.

To establish the garden, TTC provided 4,400 square feet of space. Landscape architect Sheila Wertimer worked with the project partners to develop a garden concept and design. Her design includes four growing areas arranged in a parterre style at the center of the garden, flanked by two walking and sitting areas.  Construction began in October 2006 and was completed in January 2007.

The Patrick E. Ringwald Memorial Culinary Garden provides a unique learning experience for students at the Culinary Institute of Charleston. It was formally dedicated on Wednesday, April 18, 2007.
