Continuing Education Online Login (WebCT) Instructions & FAQs > Pop-up ad blockers/Spyware/Parasites
Pop-up ad blockers/Spyware/Parasites

Pop-up blockers

While using WebCT, if you are unable to view discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links, then you need to disable pop-up blocking for your WebCT server.

Depending on the pop-up blocking software you are using, you may be able to set your WebCT server as an allowed site, or you may need to disable the pop-up blocker while using WebCT.

Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. This can prevent WebCT from performing properly.

Most pop-up blockers have a clearly marked icon added to the browser toolbar.  Click the icon to get the disable and enable options.  If you are unable to locate the icon and you don't know how to disable the pop-up blockers, visit http://www.webct.com/tuneup/viewpage?name=tuneup_browser_tuneup_windows_ie and scroll down to the section, "To disable pop-up blockers for WebCT" for more information.

Spyware / Parasites

A forbidden or not authorized error message usually occurs when you have spyware or browser helper objects (BHOs) installed on your computer.

Spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. On the Internet, spyware is programming that is put in someone's computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties. Spyware can get in a computer as a software virus or as the result of installing a new program. Spyware is often installed without the user's consent, as a drive-by download, or as the result of clicking some option in a deceptive pop-up window.  (Definition from whatis.com)

Make sure you do not have any parasite software on your computer.  For more information about this, please visit the following website: <http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite> .

If you have browser helper objects (BHOs) installed, they will cause difficulties with WebCT if you use Internet Explorer.  To see what BHOs you have installed on your computer, you can install BHODemon from Definitive Solutions.  BHODemon will tell you about any BHO installed and it allows you to disable and re-enable if you wish.  For more information on BHOs, go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/bho/

If you cannot uninstall the BHOs, try using Netscape as your browser.  (The browser tune-up will show you which versions of Netscape are compatible with WebCT.)
