Interior Design Certificate I

To earn the certificate, you must satisfactorily complete the courses listed below. Please note the order and prerequisites listed. It will take approximately 18 months to complete the certificate. Because of the outside projects that must be completed, we do not recommend taking Interior Design II and Materials Presentation at the same time.

  • Interior Design III:  All courses listed above must be taken before you enroll in this course.

*  Interior Design I requires a textbook, Decorating Ideas that Work, by Heather J. Paper.  The cost is $21.95 and can be purchased the first night of class in the Registration Office, Building 910, Room 105.

Interior Design I

Learn the basic rules for color, wallpapering, furniture arranging, accessorizing and lighting. Also learn what to look for when selecting quality flooring, wood furniture, upholstery and fabrics. Books not included.

Drafting I

Topics include reading blueprints, using an architect’s scale, and drafting floor plans and elevations by hand. Learn to lay out room and furniture plans. Students will need to purchase the following supplies for the class:

Interior Design III

This course helps you design an entire house. Learn to read blueprints, work with particular furniture styles, mix patterns and select proper paint colors. Learn to prepare for an interview for a position in interior design. Prerequisites: Interior Design I and II, Window Treatments and Materials Presentation. Books not included

Materials Presentation

Develop a clear understanding of how materials should be displayed using the appropriate proportions, titles, keys and legends. Use hands-on techniques in building a material board for professional interior design presentations and learn to organize specification notebooks. Note: This course is a prerequisite for Interior Design III.

Home Lighting

Introduction to Sewing NEW!

Do you have a sewing machine but you are a little fuzzy on how to actually use it? Learn how to perform the basic task of using your sewing machine and then move on to learning how to make a button hole, sew on buttons and install a zipper. Students will need the following supplies: scissors; multi-pack of universal needles including sizes 11, 14 and 16; thread (any color) bobbins; sewing machine; and general sewing foot zipper/cording foot and button foot.

Introduction to Upholstery NEW!

In this hands-on class, students will upholster a parson’s chair. These stylish yet classic chairs are popular staples for the home. The best part of all is that they are surprisingly basic to upholster, using the simple principles of “pull and staple” dining seats combined with just a few techniques used by the pros. Chair, fabric and any additional supplies to be provided by instructor. Students will need the following supplies: heavy-duty stapler, Arrow T-50 staples, hammer, pliers and scissors.

Tailored Slipcovers NEW!

Learn to sew professional quality slipcovers perfectly tailored to your furniture. Because of their versatility and ease of care, tailored slipcovers have become essential for many of the most fashionable homes.Using on-site furniture, learn to create slipcover patterns, pin-fit patterns onto furniture, and sew patterns together to complete a finished slipcover. Basic sewing skills are required. Each student must bring their own sewing machine to each class. Materials needed for class include scissors, quilting pins and measuring tape.

Upholstery: Turning Trash into Treasure

Learn to up-cycle drab furniture into fabulous showpieces in this new course conducted by Pamela Bowen. Learn how to upholster a wing-back chair with hands-on practice, step-by-step, learning the same techniques and tricks the pros use. Each student is provided a chair to practice on in class. This exciting course combines the instruction and hands-on training you need to be able to transform your own furniture into the fashionable pieces seen in decorating magazines. Students must bring the following items to class: heavy-duty stapler, 1/2” staples, needle-nose pliers, scissors, hammer, flat-head screw driver, and fabric tape measure.

Meet your instructors

Karie Calhoun, instructorKarie Calhoun is a graduate of Anderson University with a bachelor's degree in interior design. She has more than 15 years of residential and commercial design experience. She currently operates her own design business, Karie Calhoun Interiors. In 2004, Karie successfully passed the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) Exam, which is a two-day accreditation examination. Karie has been teaching at Trident Technical College for seven years. She teaches several interior design courses, sharing her professional education, experience and creativity with her students. She has won several ASID interior design competition awards and has had her work published in several books and magazines. When Karie is not designing or teaching she enjoys spending time with her husband Brian and their 7-year-old son Anderson and 4-year-old daughter Madison.

April Lipps, instructorApril Lipps has worked in interior design for 25 years, 17 of which she has owned and managed AKL Professional Interiors. She is a graduate of Ohio University with an associate degree in arts and a bachelor's degree in interior design. Upon graduation she took a month-long tour of Europe to study architecture. That interest in architecture brought her to historic Charleston to begin her career. She has also developed and taught the Interior Design continuing education program at Trident Technical College for more than 20 years.

Her style of designing is to listen, observe and develop a design plan that is specific to the client’s needs. April is known for her “wow” factor. She likes to incorporate unusual architectural elements, unique draperies, custom furniture, and color and accessories to complement the design.

Trudy BrownTrudy Brown started her design career in 1986. She obtained a master’s degree in interior design from Winthrop University and a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from the University of South Carolina. With a passion for design, Trudy is gifted with an intuitive ability to read her clients and create personalized spaces that suit their individual lifestyles. She is experienced in various specialties of design, encompassing not only new construction but also remodeling and redesign of all areas of the family home, including kitchen and bath, lighting, furniture, accessories and window treatments.
