In this interactive camp, learn the tricks to getting homework done faster and easier! Through fun exercises you will learn great memorization techniques and ways to stay focused and retrieve information. Successful homework practices also teach skills such as organization, problem solving, memory enhancement and goal setting. Be a star student and get better grades!

Interactive learning activities present opportunities to develop five important leadership skills: communicating effectively, being a team player, and decision-making, presentation and social skills. Learn about current issues, both positive and negative, in your school, sports and social environments. Campers will leave with greater confidence to succeed. Join your peers for fun with a serious mission – learning to be a leader!

The Leadership Program is a lively and highly interactive series of workshops designed to build your leadership potential. Identify the qualities of an effective leader and, through various activities, learn techniques to enhance your leadership skills. Discover how to strengthen your interpersonal and communication skills, be a team player, manage your time, plan and set goals, make decisions and solve problems, improve your presentation skills and network for success. The final day will end with a "graduation party" during which you can practice your skills learned from the entire week on each other, on staff and faculty at the college, and on your parents. 

Prerequisite: Leadership Program. You asked for this camp and here it is. Leadership 2.0 takes teens to the next level. Being a teenager is exciting and challenging as they face tough issues and life-changing decisions. Through a variety of interactive sessions, teens will leave the camp with improved self-esteem, tools to resist peer pressure and achieve their goals and enhanced interpersonal and communication skills. They will engage in exercises revolving around leadership, diversity, ethics, conflict resolution and relationship building. 

Innocent or guilty? Take turns playing prosecutor, judge and jury in this intriguing introduction to law and the court system. You get to hear cases, present testimony and decide the verdict in a mock trial.  Conducted by TTC staff members Pamela Brown, dean of Student Development, and Chandra Vick, director of Global Opportunities, who are also attorneys.

Campers learn positive steps for managing money, such as goal setting, budgeting and saving. Using hands-on activities and interactive computer models and games, as well as presentations from financial professionals and field trips, campers gain knowledge that is both practical and applicable, guiding them in making sound financial decisions.

Don’t freak out - be prepared. Attack the SAT ... and WIN! Become familiar with SAT-type questions, develop test-taking strategies, manage test panic, increase your confidence and speed, and get a review of test content. The focus is on critical reading, vocabulary development, sentence completion, passages, multiple choice, grammar and mathematics. On the first day of camp, there will be an overview for parents and students about the course content and online resources available. 

Please join us for a great learning experience! This summer camp incorporates modeling etiquette, posture, nail care, self-improvement skills and a photo shoot. It also covers proper introductions, table manners, telephone and cell phone manners, polite behaviors, nutrition tips and personal safety. This camp is a great confidence booster for teens. Each teen receives a complimentary photo. *Each student should bring four outfits on Tuesday for the instructor to review for the photo.

Come and meet new amigos and have a fiesta each day! Learn some basic Spanish through games, music and fun activities!  Learn how to follow simple commands, have a basic conversation, and learn colors, numbers, weather, and more! Classes will be interactive and students will be immersed in the Spanish language and culture.

Develop the language and gain knowledge of the rich cultural traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. Campers participate in interactive activities while being immersed in the Spanish language and culture.

If you enjoy the outdoors, weekend camping trips or afternoons on a hiking trail, this camp is for you. It covers basic first aid, CPR and survival skills to stay safe. Learn the importance of fire, food, water, shelter, signaling and compass reading. Learn what to do when you encounter wild animals. Each student will take home their own first-aid kit. Course is taught by paramedics, fireman and military-trained survival experts.

Computer Technology

Campers embark on a fun adventure into the awesome world of art in video games! Learn how to create works of 2-D and 3-D art that can be used in video games, and get hands-on with software that professional game makers use to create digital art in their favorite video games. *Flash drive required for this camp*

Learn how some of your favorite games are made, as well as get hands-on experience with the software tools used to create them. Campers will work individually and with classmates on video game design activities. *Flash drive required for this camp*

Learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals and vehicles) populate a virtual world and campers create a program to animate the objects. Upon completion of the camp, students will create an animation for telling a story or playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the Web. They will present their projects in class on the final day.

Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world for entertainment and education. In this camp, students focus on real-world architectural structures and apply them in Minecraft. This camp promotes awareness of architectural design, applying these designs to an 8-bit-style video game using simple mathematical conversions, encourage creativity through design and team-building through effective communication.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to create the stunning works of art you see in video games? In this camp, you will get hands-on with the same tools that digital artists use to create art in video games. This camp provides the foundations of art in video games and prepares you for the next camp, Advanced Art for Video Games. *Flash drive required for this camp*

(Prerequisite: Art for Video Games) This is the next step in creating art for video games. In this camp, continue to build a strong portfolio of digital art, while learning how to animate and import your art into a video game. At the end of this camp, students will have the beginnings of a professional digital art portfolio. *Flash drive required for this camp*

Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world for entertainment and education. In this camp, students will be introduced to the fun, family-friendly game of Minecraft while simultaneously learning the manipulatives of a computer. Campers will focus primarily on how to create and build a functioning community within this educational game.

Gamestar Mechanic is a game and online community that teaches kids how to design their own games. Game design builds systems thinking, 21st century skills, creative problem solving, art and aesthetics, writing and storytelling, and creates a motivation for STEM learning.

We take the knowledge you learned in Video Game Design and expand upon it, creating a video game. Apply all you have learned to create a game in alpha state. *Flash drive required for this camp*

Creative Arts

Kids learn to create and craft their own digital movies with a common touch-screen hand-held device. Through a series of hands-on activities, they learn a cinematic approach to capturing moving pictures and D.I.Y. tools to enhance film making. Starting with basic picture composition, kids learn to apply the ‘golden mean’ technique to improve their photography. They then focus on applying the basic camera techniques to creating film using storyboards and shot set-ups. Finally, they  explore camera-stabilization with tripods, dollies and more. Campers build a dolly and steadicam using materials from the local hardware store! At the end the week they will have completed their own flip books, camera obscura and storyboards, and filmed their own miniature movies. The camp finishes with a marathon of the scenes they have filmed all week, with popcorn and a disk (or thumb-drive) with their footage, and their first clap-board to take the action home!

Create awesome photographs of your friends, family and pets with this digital photography camp. Learn about the different kinds of cameras and how they work while creating photos, editing and doing all that cool photography stuff. You also learn how to use the creative options on your digital camera. *A camera with creative options and flash is encouraged.*

For the Artist in ME- Explore the Romare Bearden’s style of collage using magazines. You will create a mosaic on wood pineapples, experience the thrill of painting like Jackson Pollock, and learn about Klint Magic and more. On Friday, there will be a reception for the artists so family members can view their artwork. 

What really happens inside your camera when you push the button?  Learn both the technical side and the art of photography. Campers are encouraged to look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. This course encourages digital scrapbooking and also covers the basics for a yearbook staffer. Learn all the creative options available on your camera. *A camera with a flash and creative options is highly recommended.*

Get smart with your smartphone! Learn how to take photos with your smartphone, edit with the latest and greatest apps, make collages and share with your friends! With this week-long intensive camp, you will stretch the limits of your smartphone capabilities and be the awe of your friends. Be prepared to take lots of photos every day.

This summer, you can create art works in several mediums, including, but not limited to, pencils, charcoal, crayon, pastels, paint and plaster. Explore multiple techniques and processes, including mixed media. Draw, paint, and sculpt; work with a local exhibiting artist ; and create your own fantastic artwork inspired by things you like and your surroundings. So bring your imagination and let’s create amazing art.

Culinary and Pastry

IMPORTANT SAFETY AND GENERAL INFORMATION Children must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and closed-toe shoes. No Crocs or plastic clogs. Long hair should be restrained. No jewelry. Participants should bring a small container to take home food samples. Snacks are not necessary for the culinary and pastry students.     Please note: Titles of camps may be the same from last year, but the food selections will be different.

                         

Kids' College 2012 Student Success Story Scott Branton I’m like Remy, the mouse, in Ratatouille. Remember when Remy learned to cook? Well, that was me, last summer, when I took Culinary Arts classes at Kids College. Mom and I used to mix chemicals, but the results would generally be a disappointing fizzle. In Culinary Arts I mixed ingredients that turned out like a break-through in science! I’ve been to Kids College at our local Technical College for the past few years and really enjoyed it. Last summer was my first experience in Culinary Arts courses. That first day when I walked into the Culinary Arts department, I was a little cagey not knowing what to expect. As Mom and I walked down the expansive, echoing hallways and peered through the massive viewing windows into the labs, I saw huge counters, voluminous mixing bowls, monstrous utensils, gigantic ovens and sinks, and cavernous refrigerators. I felt like a Lilliputian. After I adapted to the environment I felt like I was right at home measuring, stirring, mixing, sniffing, baking and decorating. That week I made, decorated, and carried home five cakes, each alive with flavor. When my neighbors saw me coming with food in hand, their faces lit up and they flung the door open wide. I never expected to have so much fun! Pastry Boot Camp was even more enjoyable. Every time I heard “bing,” I jumped down from my stool and was the first one to the oven, so when the door was opened, I could inhale the delectable aroma of the baked goodies: soft, gooey cookies, cheesy bacon quiche, melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon rolls, and oh, so much more. It was all so delicious that my family and I put on weight! My third and final class was Culinary Boot Camp. Seeing my cousin as Chef immediately made me happy and feel more connected to the class. I remember the scrumptious recipes and the aroma of smoked, grilled pork chops wafting through the air making my mouth water. I made roasted parmesan potatoes, sauté chicken, rice pilaf, candied sweet potatoes, twice baked potatoes, and best of all…foil-wrapped, baked fish. This divine dish took only half an hour to make and bake, but it was like a little taste of Heaven in my mouth. The moment arrived when I finally got to open the aluminum foil packet. As the savory steam escaped, I smiled at the two shrimp shaped into a heart atop a moist fillet of fish flowing in its juices. Ooh, la, la. Even though mixing chemicals may disappoint me, mixing ingredients always makes me feel good inside. I like knowing that when I’m done cooking the meal, it will be a masterpiece. I like knowing that what I have made will be eaten and enjoyed by someone else. I like seeing their reaction after they’ve taken a bite and hearing them say, “Give my compliments to the chef.” Who knows, maybe I’ll be Remy after all.

Math and Science

Are you ready to go on a mission to outer space? Step into the shoes of a rocket scientist and learn the fundamentals of propulsion and rocket design. Discover the fundamentals involved in launching rockets, and construct and launch your own rockets while learning about Newton’s laws of motion and the history and challenges of space travel.

Enjoy a week of high-flying adventure. From logging “flight time“ on simulators to building gliders, the basics of aeronautics will be the focus of the week. Campers get their wings upon successful completion of the camp. 

Enjoy this highly interactive camp with instruction by MUSC's Department of Neurosciences staff as they present brain specimens and discuss the general organization, functions and dysfunctions of the brain. Young scientists can explore and investigate the hidden wonders of the microscopic world. Get a close-up view of bugs, cells, plants and many other specimens. 

Do you ever wonder how microscopes, Xray's, MRI's, and PET scans work? Join us in this interactive course as we learn the basics of light spectroscopy, wave optics, nuclear chemistry and nanotechnology. Discover the science behind the different types of imaging techniques used in biomedical science today!

Investigate geology, paleontology, and archeology.  Dig into the physical remains left behind by people and animals in the past.  Participate in a mock archeological dig and assemble the pre-historic skeletal remains you uncover. Become a mad science chemist! Discover how chemical reactions are everywhere. Figure out if a chemical change has occurred right before your eyes, and explore the properties of polymers. Mix, mush and brew together different chemicals to create things. Campers are introduced to how inventors work and why many inventions are created by accident.

You will be the super science sleuths. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations and crime lab chemistry as you perform as many as 15 different experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search for the evidence, gather clues and discover how science can help solve a mystery. Campers will dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances and much more. After all that, you can use your new skills to solve crimes of the century.

Gain a better understanding of how environmental issues affect our world. Topics include the vital role of the food chain; the effects of, and difficulties in cleaning up oil spills through a hands-on approach; the world of eco-systems; and the major climate factors and patterns associated with weather. Become a caretaker of the Earth as we look at ways to help reduce our garbage. You'll discover the science behind solar energy and even make your own solar cooker.

Explore science as a fun and exciting process of investigation. Each day we conduct experiments, discover the amazing and test our own ideas. Learn about lasers. Dancing, swirling, pulsating laser light will be part of our laser light show. Work with our light blitzer as a laser light flashes to music. Conduct experiments with our laser pointer plus lenses and mirrors as we have fun and learn. Build and take home your own kaleidoscope, spectroscope, periscope and constellation watcher. Watch the constellations in our room and learn about all the planets as you take our 3-D adventure into outer space! This workshop will be a de-light-ful hands-on experience.

Learn principles of fishing from a representative of the International Game Fish Association, the official record keepers of trophy catches all around the world. The basics of freshwater and saltwater fishing are taught along with techniques for catching the many different types of game fish. This camp includes casting target practice, knot tying, fishing safety, fishing conservation, instructional presentations, and maybe even a local field trip to try out your gear, which will be supplied. Campers will also receive a free t-shirt and rod and reel combo courtesy of the IGFA.

Discover how the insides of our bodies work, how each of our organs has its own job to do, how atoms and molecules bond together and what happens to those bonds during chemical reactions. Build many different models demonstrating physical science and technology concepts, including various powered forces and motion, simple machines and more. Campers build a variety of projects and some examples include a car, golf cart, Model A Ford, semi truck and trailer, rubber band trigger car, snow plow, motorized shopping cart, stand-up scooter, three-wheeler, tow truck, trick car, wagon, wheel barrow and Zamboni. This is a great camp for teaching teamwork and preparing students for engineering and problem-solving challenges.

Learn basic engineering and logical thinking skills while building various components and structures with LEGO bricks. You also learn basic programming using the LEGO RCX system. Mechanical and electrical LEGO components that replicate components used in the industrial and engineering field are introduced. The skills learned prepare students for LEGO robotic competition. The content is the same as last year's program.

Overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all – your mind.  With a little bit of ingenuity campers will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs.  Bring out your inner inventor and come up with crazy, new ways to solve old and new problems. While Thomas Edison said 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration, this camp is 100% FUN!

Build your own futuristic Maglev car to race and take home. In 1999 a Japanese five-car Maglev train set a record of 345 miles/hour.Your's won’t go that fast, but we will have fun building it and learning how it operates. Learn about the relationship between magnetism and electricity. You will also get to build a simple Maglev track as well as a cool electromagnet. Learn how motors work, as well as generators. Build and take home the world’s simplest motor. Make your own compass and take part in many other magnificent magnetic activities! Yes, Sciensational Workshops again starts with the Maglev car (magnetism - electricity - levitation) and goes in all directions to have fun and learn while doing hands-on activities.

Campers also learn to send secret messages using special codes. Awesome Mad Science take-homes are included each day.

In partnership with NASA - From our earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program will send campers on a quest for exploration of outer space!  Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch! Each camper’s mission is to go where bright young minds love to go! (Space suits not required.)

Get a sneak peek at what really goes on in your head! Learn about diseases, drugs and deadly neurological disasters and their effects on our own brains. This is a great chance to get to know your brain inside and out. Work with real neurologists as you explore what’s behind that cortex. This camp is perfect for anyone who is interested in psychology, human behavior and neurobiology. Staff from MUSC’s Department of Neurosciences assist junior scientists as they explore the brain.

Jump to the next generation of LEGO robotics. This camp introduces the NXT LEGO robotic system. Build robotic components and learn new software so you can program the robots to perform given tasks. You will work in pairs to accomplish the assignments. The content is the same as last year's program.

v    Blast off with this fun and innovative introduction to rocketry. This camp covers the history of rocket advancements and technology brought about through space exploration, the space race, rocket science in school, rocket construction, and an introduction to the hobby of rocketry. It includes labs on astronomy, rocket simulation and rocket building, leading up to a rocket launch at the end of the week.

Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots. Learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you!

Join the crime scene and be a part of solving the strangest crimes in town. Experience what it takes to be a true science detective. Explore forensics to explain how a crime happened using some of the same experiments that a forensic scientist would use. Each day you will explore the fundamental nuts and bolts of chemistry and become the best science detective. When you are part of this camp you will always be looking over your shoulder to make sure you are not being followed!

From the earliest flying machines to the first rocket flights, this week-long exciting, hands-on program teaches campers to build many different flying devices, discover how Newton’s Laws of motion help explain how things move and how rockets fly, and show them how amazing our Milky Way is. Experience the laws of motion and gravity, and see how they work in space, in the air – and on the ground!

Know your facts and gain practice skills to start the school year right. Muscle the math challenge with times tables, learn games to play with multiplication, and gain tools to make you strong and mighty in math. Muscle up to the math power!

We will use fish as the medium for a rewarding experience in an integrated curriculum of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). This curriculum is driven by problem-solving, discovery and exploratory learning, and requires students to actively engage a situation to find its solution. Activities include using a microscope, dissections, observing and designing animal behaviors and integrating art through science. Campers will learn to think critically and work as a team member and independently, while having fun and learning 21st century skills that will allow them to be more successful members of society.

Take a walk on the wild side as we peek into the natural world. Discover how birds and beasts live and adapt to their environment, and spend some time with us in the world of dinosaurs! Perform an owl pellet dissection and take home a tiny skeleton. Have you ever wondered how bugs defend themselves or what they eat?  Discover how to track an animal and use its footprints to learn more about how it lives. Uncover how predator-prey relationships work as they explore the world of animal survival.  This is a WILD week of insects, birds, beasts and dinosaurs!
