Furniture Making

Prepare for work in the furniture industry. This program was recently upgraded to 85 hours, with the addition of the Advanced Furniture Making course. In this program you gain entry-level skills from three courses: Basic Furniture-Making Skills, Intermediate Furniture Making and Advanced Furniture Making. All course sessions are held at Woodcraft Supply in St. Andrews Shopping Center in West Ashley. Lectures are paired with hands-on practice of manufacturing finished wood projects, both in class and at home. Course materials vary in cost, according to your choice of materials. Basic Furniture-Making Skills

Learn how to work safely with basic equipment. Topics include shop safety, ergonomics, protective clothing, respirators and dust control. Also covered are qualities of lumber, basic blueprint reading and design, correct use of unpowered and powered hand tools, joinery, clamping and gluing, and finish hardware. You construct a gallery-quality jewelry box, both in class and at home, using a wood of your choice. An additional fee ranging from $80 to $100 is charged to cover the cost of the course book and materials used in the project. Prerequisite: Basic math skills.
