Basic Patient Care Skills

Alzheimer's Caregiver Skills

Gain a better understanding of Alzheimer's Disease with this course. It is designed to assist those who provide care for family members, students enrolled in health care related programs, and health care workers providing care for patients with this debilitating disease. The course covers three relevant areas: understanding the illness, improving communication and understanding behavior. Lectures with PowerPoint presentations and interactive role play are used. A certificate of completion is awarded. Books not required

EKG Basics

Learn the basics of electrocardiogram procedures including 12-lead placement and equipment use during this eight-hour course. Course includes successful completion of a general EKG knowledge test and demonstration of skills in performing a 12-lead EKG. Student must attend all sessions to receive a grade of successful. Upon successful completion of the course students are awarded a certificate of completion. Prerequisite: Student must be CNA (certified nurse aide), RN/LPN, or certified medical or dental assistant. Book not required

IV Catheter Insertion

This course teaches the correct technique of peripheral IV catheter insertion. Topics include vein location and choices for IV placement, equipment and supplies, insertion, checking for correct placement, and anchoring techniques. Lab skills are performed on IV therapy mannequin arms. Successful completion of this course includes a passing grade on a written test plus demonstration of correct handling of equipment and IV catheter placement skills. Prerequisite: Student must be nursing student, active RN/LPN, or other medically employed personnel with documentation of need for job-related IV insertion skill from employer. Book not required

Medication Technician

This course offers CNAs the opportunity to enhance skills and advance career opportunities. Many assisted-living facilities employ med techs to pass resident medications. This 32-hour course covers basic pharmacology and medication effects, plus chronic and acute signs and symptoms of disease diagnosis as related to medications. Students must attend ALL course sessions, complete and turn in all assigned homework, prove 100 percent proficiency in preparing and passing medications, and make a passing grade on the basic medication test to receive a grade of successful. Upon successful completion of the course, students are awarded a certificate of completion. Prerequisite: CNA (certified nurse aide). Required textbook: Current edition of a Nursing Drug Reference of student choice, available at the Continuing Education Bookroom at the Information Desk and most book stores. Book not included

Phlebotomy - Basic

Basic phlebotomy is presented during this introductory 16-hour course. Learn to recognize the different blood specimen tubes and use, order of draw, correct procedure of venipuncture, safety issues, and infection control. Course includes successful completion of general phlebotomy test and demonstration of correct venipuncture technique. Students must attend all course sessions, complete and turn in all assigned homework, successfully complete two venipunctures using mannequin arms, and make a passing grade on the basic phlebotomy test. Upon successful completion of the course students receive a certificate of completion. Prerequisite: Student must be CNA (certified nurse aide), RN/LPN, or medical or dental assistant. Required textbook: Phlebotomy: Procedures and Practices by Lynn B.
