Phlebotomy

Credit Requirements: 17 Semester Credit Hours

Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists assist in collection, transportation and basic lab procedures for many types of specimens, such as venous blood, arterial blood, urine, sputum and other body tissues.

Phlebotomy skills are needed by a wide variety of health care workers, including nurses, physicians, clinical assistants, patient care technicians, medical assistants, medical laboratory technicians, radiologic technicians and respiratory care personnel.

Admission Requirements
Applicants will be admitted to this program on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis. Applicants are considered to be qualified for admission to the next available class when they meet all TTC and program requirements. New classes begin each Fall Semester. Students may attend on a part-time basis provided they complete the entire program within 24 months. Students should be able to schedule two days of clinical experience during regular Monday-Friday daytime work hours.

APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS
I. General College Admission Requirements 
Achieve admission to the College by meeting TTC's requirement for certificate programs. Please note that applicants not achieving appropriate test scores will be required to complete courses indicated by placement test scores.

Note: Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the Phlebotomy program.

II.  Program Admission Requirements
Applicants should ensure that each of the following admission requirements is on file in the Admissions office as soon as it is completed. Information may be submitted in person or by mail to:

  1. Achieve qualifying scores on the College's placement test, SAT or ACT. Following College orientation, contact your academic advisor and complete all courses indicated by placement test scores.
  2. Complete an Allied Health application for the Phlebotomy program.
    Note: When the number of applicants qualifying at the same time exceeds the number of spaces available in this program, admission will be prioritized according to the date and time that the Allied Health application was received by the Admissions office.
  3. Attend an advising session and obtain a signed statement from a program faculty advisor verifying attendance. (Advising schedules are available in Health Sciences Building, Bldg. 630, Room 206).
  4. Satisfy academic probation/suspension requirements, if applicable, by providing proof of a minimum 2.0 GPA on all college course work by submitting official copies of college transcripts, other than TTC transcripts,
    OR
    Complete six semester credit hours with a minimum grade of C.
  5. Achieve the equivalent placement test score
    OR
    complete MAT 101 with a minimum grade of C.
  6. Achieve the equivalent placement test score or complete ENG 032 with a grade of SC.
  7. Complete CPT 101 or equivalent course work with a minimum grade of C.
  8. Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA for courses taken at TTC, and not be on academic probation/suspension or disciplinary suspension at the time of admission and date of entry into the program.
  9. At the time of entry to the program, show evidence of completion of the criminal background check required by the college.

III. General Admission Procedures for the Phlebotomy Program
Prior to admission to the program, provide the TTC program coordinator with a completed, current Allied Health-Student Health Record and current certification in CPR. Applicants must also be able to meet the "Essential Functions/Technical Standards" while enrolled in this program. Copies of these standards are available from the Allied Health office in the Health Sciences Building (Building 630), Room 206. Applicants who meet TTC and program requirements will be considered qualified and will be admitted on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis. Qualified applicants will be sent a letter indicating the year and semester that they have been admitted.

Part-time enrollment is permitted as long as students complete all Phlebotomy course work within 24 months.

IV. Readmission to the Phlebotomy Program
Students who receive a W, D or F in a prerequisite, corequisite or AHS course may request consideration for readmission to the Phlebotomy program. Readmission to the program is not automatic. Contact the program coordinator for details. See the Allied Health Sciences overview.

Note: Falsification of any information submitted will make a student ineligible for admission to or continuation in the Phlebotomy program.
