Educational Value

17.1 Instructors showing respect for students’ diverse talents and ways of learning

Quality Standards

17.1.1 Instructors, through their teaching methodologies, will recognize the reality that students learn in different ways and although one methodology might bore some students, it provides good instruction to others.

17.1.2 Instructors will monitor student-to-student (S2S) communications and require mutual respect between students regarding differences in how they may view issues and process information.

17.1.3 Instructors will know their students well enough to use some students’ talents to instruct other students. (See Overview)

17.2 Instructors optimally balance challenge and support that relates to individual student readiness and potential

Quality Standards

17.2.1 Instructors will be aware of student behaviors that might reduce the challenge of the course and avoid allowing students to “drive down the quality” of the curriculum.

17.2.2 Instructors will be knowledgeable of students’ beginning points of learning ability. Instructors will be constantly aware of what they want to accomplish in the course, and course content will be presented in such a way as to provide students opportunities to experience major learning gains.

17.2.3 Instructors will receive training regarding the characteristics of “high-risk-for-failure” students from the Center for Teaching Support and will do what is reasonable to help these students succeed. Instructors optimally balance their efforts across all their students when possible.

Quality Standards

17.3.1 Instructors will provide opportunities for students to actively engage in learning the course content materials.

17.3.2 Instructors will provide an environment within the course that is conducive to open dialogue and inquiry.

17.4 Instructors exciting students about the subject being taught

Quality Standards

17.4.1 Instructors will reflect a personal interest in their course content to students, which in turn will increase student interest.

17.4.2 Instructors will have a positive desire to teach and reflect that desire to their students.

17.4.3 Instructors will maintain professional development activities that keep them current and interested in their course content.
