Educational Value

13.1 Instructors having a clear understanding of their role

Quality Standards

13.1.1 Instructors will have a clear understanding of their roles as an instructor which is detailed in their job description and Faculty Performance Measurement System (FPMS) form.

13.1.2 Instructors understand that their major role is to facilitate learning in their students and that this facilitation best occurs when there is mutual respect between instructors and students.

13.1.3 Instructors know the mission of the college and their responsibility fulfilling this mission. (See Vision Statement)

13.1.4 Instructors know how to balance faculty, student and college needs to increase learning outcomes in students.

13.2 Instructors being prepared for interaction with their students

Quality Standards

13.2.1 Instructors will (1) preplan their teaching strategies and (2) know how they intend to implement these strategies prior to delivering content information.

13.2.2 Instructors will be "proactive" in their communications with students. They will initiate dialogue and use this dialogue to stimulate thought in their students.

13.2.3 Instructors will use active learning techniques to stimulate learning and communication within courses.

13.2.4 Instructors will continuously assess the effectiveness of their interactions with students.

13.2.5 Instructors will be genuine and empathic when interacting with their students. Although there are times when instructors will need to be direct, such directives will be more readily accepted if there are established relationships with students.

13.3 Instructors being aware of the characteristics of the audience they are teaching

Quality Standards

13.3.1 Instructors will have knowledge of the characteristics of the students they are teaching.

13.3.2 Instructors will understand the differences between traditional college (younger) and non- traditional college (older) students.

13.3.3 Instructors will understand that the characteristics of their student audience may change depending on (1) course, (2) term, or (3) times courses are offered within a term.

13.3.4 Instructors will adjust strategies, without minimizing their curriculum, to maximize student learning outcomes.

13.4 Instructors keeping all course time/place commitments

Quality Standards

13.4.1 Instructors will maintain all time/place commitments which are (1) included in the instructor's syllabus/addendum, (2) part of any face-to-face portion of a course, and (3) verbally stated during the term of the course. Any changes will be communicated to students.

13.4.2  Although traditional courses are time/place limited, instructors who have time/place components will (1) arrive on time and (2) provide preplanned, meaningful activities during the total time of the commitment (i.e., "on time...the whole time").
