Student Assessment by Instructor

Educational Value

12.1 Students’ course-content graded evaluations being fair, valid and reliable measurements

Quality Standards

12.1.1 Instructors will provide graded evaluations that are challenging and direct in what they assess. Manipulation of graded evaluation by modifying insignificant information is to be avoided.

12.1.2 Instructors will provide graded evaluations that are accurate. Graded evaluations are learning experiences, and student-to-instructor (S2I) rebuttal opportunities help in this process when appropriate. As instructors read these rebuttals, they can better determine the accuracy or the inaccuracy of the student’s response. Feedback from instructor-to-student (I2S) can help the students validate what they have learned or clarify previously learned information.

12.1.3 Instructors will tell students and provide, in a printable format, the specifics of how they will be graded. Instructors will provide graded evaluations that are consistent with these standards.

Educational Value

12.2 Instructors returning course-content evaluations in a timely manner with informative comments

Quality Standards

12.2.1 Instructors will return comments in as minimal a period of time as possible. This time period is not to exceed two weeks from the date of the evaluation. When these evaluations are time-sensitive (e.g., last week of the term), then turn around will occur one class meeting before the student’s next course-content evaluation or the last day of the term for the course.

12.2.2 Instructors will provide in their feedback all necessary information for the student to know (1) what was correct and incorrect and (2) how their answers were incorrect.

Educational Value

12.3 Instructors providing communication to students of their academic progress in the course

Quality Standards

12.3.1 Instructors will use the D2L software to communicate with students about their grades and academic progress.

12.3.2 Instructors will update and post student grades in a timely manner. (See 12.2.1 and 12.4.2)

Educational Value

12.4 Instructors providing their policy regarding makeup examinations or assignments

Quality Standards

12.4.1 Instructors will provide to their students in an electronic, printable format in their syllabus and/or addendum the policies for make-up examinations.

12.4.2 Instructors will return these graded examinations or assignments to the student in a timely manner, but not to exceed two weeks after the make-up examination is completed. This rule does not apply in the last two weeks of the term. During this time, the assessments will be graded and students informed of grades in a shorter period of time.

Educational Value

12.5 Instructors promoting academic integrity in all assessment situations

Quality Standards

12.5.1 Instructors will provide students with a link to the college policy for academic integrity. This link will be noted in the syllabus, addendum and/or electronic, printable document in D2L.

12.5.2 Instructors will enforce the college academic integrity policy. Discussing academic integrity violations with students should be done in private.
