TTC Receives ACE_Wal-Mart Success for Veterans Award Grant
In April 2009, TTC was awarded a $100,000 grant from the the American Council on Education and the Wal-Mart Foundation. TTC was one of 20 higher education institutions nationwide recognized for demonstrated leadership in developing programs to increase access to and success in postsecondary education for veterans and their families. TTC's project, Project VETS (Veterans' Educational Transition Services), will enhance TTC's existing programs for veterans and their families and create a continuum of services pre-college through graduation. Services will include the development of an orientation program specifically for veterans; in-service training on PTSC and other veteran-specific issues for TTC counselors, faculty and staff; development of training videos; appointment of a Veterans' Task Force; and organization of a veterans student club. In addition, existing space will be converted into a Veterans Lounge and Study Center.
Alcoa Foundation Awards TTC $200,000 Grant
In December 2007, TTC received a $200,000 grant to develop a U.S. Department of Labor federally registered apprenticeship program. The program will train entry-level production/assembly workers and help local industrial and manufacturing businesses meet their work force needs. John Autrey, TTC’s director of Apprenticeship Programs, will serve as project director for the grant.
TTC Wins Prestigious Fulbright Group Projects Abroad Grant

On May 25, 2008 five Trident Technical College instructors departed from Charleston bound for West Africa. Tim Brown, Karen Stewart-Cain, Ann McDonald, Lester Pittman and Donald West were among 13 educators selected to participate in the prestigious Mano River Fulbright program.
The objectives of the trip include experiencing daily life and customs of West Africa; drawing connections among Gullah, Geechee, and West African cultures; and sharing these lessons with African and Lowcountry students and adults. The group will study in Sierra Leone and Guinea for approximately five weeks. The entire Mano River Fulbright team includes employees from TTC, the Charleston County School District, the College of Charleston, the Avery Institute, the South Carolina State Museum, and Chicago State University.
Participants will attend lectures, visit local sites and cruise the Niger and Moa Rivers. The delegation will also visit primary and secondary schools. Each program participant will submit a journal and will conduct presentations to various civic groups in the Charleston area when they return home.
