Online & Mixed Mode Faculty: Technical Competencies for Development
The following technical competencies are necessary for developing an online or mixed mode course. (Italicized items are optional.)

Information Technology Training Center
  • Perform basic functions of the Windows operating system, such as opening, moving, resizing, and closing windows.
  • Perform basic functions of the Windows file management system, such as saving, moving, copying, deleting, and renaming files.
  • Perform basic functions of an Internet browser application (i.e., Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator), such as using search engines to locate content and copying the site’s URL for future use.
  • Generate, save, and revise a Word file.
  • Generate, save, and revise a Rich Text file.
  • Generate, save, and revise a Portable Document file.
  • Generate, save, and revise a FrontPage file.
  • Generate, save, and revise a PowerPoint file.
  • Scan and save an image file.
  • Zip and unzip files.

Center for Teaching Support
  • Develop student learning outcomes.
  • Understand student learning styles and revise delivery method or content to suit those learning styles.
  • Understand instructor teaching style and revise delivery method or content to accommodate variety of student learning styles.
  • Develop course modules that include learning objectives or outcomes, variety of content, active learning activities and assessments, and module evaluations.
  • Implement active and collaborative learning activities.
  • Implement critical thinking activities.
  • Develop course content that is instructionally sound, web-ready, and accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Develop course images that are instructionally sound, web-ready, and accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Develop learning objects that are instructionally sound, web-ready, and accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Develop media components that are instructionally sound and accessible to students with disabilities.
  • Obtain appropriate copyright clearances for course content.
  • Locate and implement online resources, such as e-books, websites, databases, etc.
  • Perform basic functions of the Desire2Learn course management system, such as designing course structure and navigation, adding course content and learning assessments. (See Faculty Training Modules page for details.)
  • Generate, save, and publish a Respondus file.
  • Generate, save, convert, and upload a StudyMate file.
  • Generate, save, and upload a Camtasia file.
