The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers assistance to currently enrolled TTC students through one-to-one appointments,
online tutoring, drop-in tutoring times, and small group workshop sessions (see schedules below).

Writers of any level or ability currently enrolled in classes at TTC can work with a writing tutor to...

  • Develop strategies for planning and organizing written work
  • Learn to develop and clearly express ideas in writing
  • Learn to demonstrate critical reading and thinking skills in writing
  • Learn the conventions of academic writing
  • Learn to recognize and correct common grammatical errors
  • Practice proofreading techniques
  • Learn to use MLA and APA formats correctly
  • Improve written English language skills

Writing tutors will not write your papers for you and will not proofread your writing for you.

Writing tutors help you identify your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and guide you toward improving your writing skills, which includes learning to edit and proofread your own work.

Tutoring appointments usually last 30 minutes and may be scheduled up to two weeks in advance (call 574-6409). Additional resources offered by The Writing Center include videos, reference books, and a series of informational handouts (see Resources link at left). The Writing Center tutors can also assist students with using Plato software in preparation for taking the PRAXIS I Exam.

Schedule to be announced

Online Writing Assistance

Online tutoring assistance is limited to written comments about the overall effectiveness of short pieces of writing (7 pages max.-- for help with longer papers, please schedule an appointment) and suggestions for “global” revisions, such as organization of ideas, focus, and development of ideas.

The writing tutor may mark some of the errors in grammar or punctuation within the paper and explain how to correct these errors; however, the writing tutor WILL NOT simply correct mistakes in the paper.

Writing tutors do not write, edit, or proofread papers for you.

To submit a paper for online tutoring, you must first join The Writing Center club in Campus Cruiser. Instructions for using online tutoring are posted on the club's webpage. Submissions must be made through The Writing Center club in Campus Cruiser and must be sent as MS Word attachments. Responses will be e-mailed (as MS Word documents) to your Campus Cruiser address within 48-72 hours of submission (not including Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays).

Please call The Learning Center at 574-6409 or stop by 920/211 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
