The Educational Opportunity Center is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education designed to assist adults in obtaining postsecondary education (education beyond the high school/GED level).
Eligibility and Services
Who is eligible?
U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens who:
- live in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties
- are 19 years of age or older
- are enrolled or want to enroll in a program of postsecondary education
How much does it cost?
All EOC services are free.
What services are available?
- Recruitment - Identifying people interested in furthering their education
- Information - Postsecondary admissions, financial aid, and scholarships.
- Counseling - Academic, career and postsecondary enrollment
- Technical assistance - Help in preparing applications for financial aid and postsecondary admissions
- Tutoring - Preparation for college entrance exams (SAT, ACT, COMPASS)--sample test for COMPASS.
- Resource Center - Books, videos and software on educational opportunities, job readiness skills, personal improvement, career information and exploration
- Referral - To GED/ABE classes and other agencies for services not provided by EOC
How are the services provided?
- Individual counseling and information sessions
- Group counseling and information sessions
- Workshops
- Visits to educational institutions
- Computer programs and written instruments to help discover occupational and educational interests
