Phlebotomy

The phlebotomy technician is often the only member of the clinical laboratory team who has direct contact with patients and their families.  The phlebotomist must enjoy daily challenges, be able to communicate effectively, and be deeply committed to quality health care.  Phlebotomy is an occupation with great responsibility, because the diagnosis of many diseases depends on the quality of the specimen that is collected and transported to the clinical laboratory.  Strict attention to confidentiality, accuracy, tactfulness, and trust are hallmarks of successful phlebotomists.

Phlebotomy skills are needed by a wide variety of health care workers, including medical laboratory technicians and technologists, nurses, physicians, clinical assistants, patient care technicians, medical assistants, radiologic technicians, and respiratory care personnel.

The Phlebotomy Program at Trident Technical College is nine months long and is convenient for students who need to work a different job while they are attending college. Classes in the first semester are held in the evening.  During the second semester students are assigned to structured clinical experiences during the daytime.  A flexible work schedule is important during the clinical experience semester.
