The scholarship was established in 1993 in memory of Mr. W. Athell Yon, in recognition of his outstanding professional contributions to the automotive industry, TTC and the community. Yon served five years on TTC's governing board and on the Area Commission, and eight years on the college's Automotive Technology Advisory Committee.
In 1954, Yon and his brother Joel founded the Yon Brothers Garage on Meeting Street in Charleston. Yon organized the Independent Garage Owners of South Carolina, worked with the American Association of Motor Administrators on national safety standards, and was named to the Board of Directors of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in 1976. He authored numerous articles for industry publications. The scholarship fund was brought to full endowment with gifts from TTC faculty, staff and alumni, as well as family, friends and community sponsors.
