The Fitness Specialist certificate will provide entry-level training for the fitness industry. Graduates will be qualified to work in gyms, commercial and corporate fitness centers and provide aerobics, cardio, weight training, wellness, and personal fitness training services. This program will target students who want comprehensive entry-level training beyond the personal trainer experience.
Enrollment: 24 students
Competencies: The program is designed based on current competencies outlined by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) so that students can be assured of learning the skills employers demand and be eligible for certification.
Schedule: The Fitness Specialist certificate program begins each Summer term. The program can be completed in three full time semesters.
Physical Plant: Courses will be offered beginning Summer of 2013 in the new Fitness Training Center on Main Campus in the 950 building.
Faculty: The Fitness Specialist faculty includes a full-time program coordinator and adjunct faculty members.
Physical Demands: A Fitness Specialist may need to be able to perform the following in day-to-day work situations. (Not all inclusive)
- Remain continuously on task for several hours while standing, sitting, moving, lifting and/or bending
- Lifting and moving loads possibly in excess of 50 lbs.
Career Opportunities: The Fitness Specialist certificate program addresses a growing need in the Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester county areas for graduates trained to provide aerobics, cardio, weight training, wellness and personal fitness training services. Target employers include gyms, corporate fitness centers, commercial fitness centers, athletic teams, hospitals, hotels, recreation departments and retirement facilities.
