COMPASS Placement Test

COMPASS, developed by ACT, was designed to help persons entering two-year colleges succeed in their educational goals.  The main purpose of the skills-assessment part of COMPASS is to help you identify your present academic strengths and needs in the areas of writing, reading, and math so you may build a solid plan for success.

Who must take the COMPASS test?

If you have applied for admission to TTC, the Admissions Office will notify you if you need to take the COMPASS test.  You may not need to test if you already have qualifying SAT or ACT scores.  Contact Admissions for additional qualifying score information.

How do you arrange for COMPASS testing at TTC?

For testing at Main, Palmer, and Berkeley campuses, you always need to schedule an appointment.  You can make an appointment by contacting Testing Services either in person or by phone at the campus on which you want to take your test. Refer to our General Information site for the hours of operation for each campus and additional information regarding holiday closings.

What should you bring?

Bring a valid picture ID (e.g., school ID, driver's license, Passport, military) and know your Social Security Number.

How will you be tested?

COMPASS is user-friendly and was designed for individuals with little or no computer experience.  Testing Services' staff will help you get started.  You will use a computer mouse to select or highlight your responses as you move through the different sections of the test.  If you have never used a computer or a mouse before, a hands-on tutorial is available before you begin.  COMPASS is self-directed and untimed.

COMPASS helps determine basic skill levels in writing, reading, and math.   Questions increase or decease in difficulty depending upon your skill level.  As the test proceeds, the computer randomly selects questions from a test bank based on your previous answers.  The difficulty level of the test questions range from very easy to very hard.  Test questions may not be omitted, nor may answers to previous questions be changed.

What types of questions can you expect?

COMPASS math covers a variety of items from prealgebra to advanced mathematics including averages, decimals, fractions, percentages, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, word problems, and basic and intermediate algebra.  The items are multiple-choice.  An online calculator is available.

COMPASS reading consists of several types of passages that are read and questions answered about the content.  The items are multiple-choice.  The reading passages are displayed on one side of the screen and the test questions and answer choices are displayed on the other side.

COMPASS writing allows the student to find and correct errors in essays.  Test items include the following content categories:  grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, as well as strategy, organization and style in effective writing.

How long is the test?

Most students take about two hours to complete the entire test (math, reading, writing).  You can work at your own pace because the tests are untimed.

What you should do to prepare for testing?

No special preparation is necessary as the tests are designed to measure skills acquired through high school, work experience, or previous college work.  However, you should take the test seriously because it is to your advantage to be accurately placed in the highest level course possible.  Before testing, you might want to review a GED Study Guide or go online for COMPASS sample questions.  The following web sites offer additional sample question for practice in the types of question found on the test:

TTC's Division of Continuing Education offers a one-day noncredit placement test refresher class.
Contact (843) 574-6655 for additional information or (843) 574-6152 to register.

How can you do your best?

Relax!  The COMPASS test is designed to help you succeed in college.  Read each question carefully.

When will you receive your results?

You will receive a printout of your COMPASS scores immediately after testing.

What do your scores mean?

The COMPASS test was developed to assist in college academic advising and course selection.  The results will help faculty advisors decide where you should begin your academic coursework.  Your scores indicate your academic strengths and weaknesses in relation to college-level work.  TTC offers developmental courses in math, reading, and writing skills.

After testing, students go to Orientation.  Orientation provides information concerning test scores and assigns the student an Advisor.  Testing Services does not interpret test scores.

COMPASS is not a pass/fail test; however, some programs require high COMPASS placement scores for program admission.

May you retake COMPASS?

If your COMPASS scores are within the retest range and extenuating circumstances exist which warrant reassessment, permission may be granted by an Orientation Leader or your Advisor.

Call one of the following numbers for additional information or to schedule a testing appointment:

Main campus - (843) 574-6410

Advanced Standing Examinations

Types of Examination Credit

CLEP.  TTC may grant credit for selected College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations with satisfactory scores.

DANTES DSST's.  TTC may grant credit for selected Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES DSST's) examinations with satisfactory scores.

Excelsior College.  TTC may grant credit for selected examinations with satisfactory scores.

PONSI.  TTC may grant credit for selected PONSI examinations with satisfactory scores.

Please contact the Registrar's Office at (843) 574-6549 for additional information on the above tests.

TTC Limitations

Advanced Standing through examination credit is subject to the following limitations:

  • The college grants up to 16 semester credit hours (but no more than one-fourth of total hours required to complete curriculum) of Excelsior College, CLEP, DANTES DSST's, or PONSI credit.
  • Students must verify that official test score reports are on file in the Admissions and Records office prior to the start of the semester during which the requested credit may be granted.
  • Students may retest six months after the original test date (CLEP and DANTES DSST's).
  • TTC will not grant credit for a course previously attempted (including withdrawals).
  • Awarded Advanced Standing credits will not affect a student's grade point average.
  • TTC does not guarantee that Advanced Standing credit awarded for required TTC courses will transfer to other institutions.

CLEP TESTING PROGRAM

The College-Level Examination Program of the College Board is a national system of credit-by-examination.  TTC is an open testing center for CLEP examinations.  TTC administers CLEP examinations throughout the year at the Main and Palmer campuses.

CLEP examinations allow examinees to demonstrate knowledge relating to specific college courses.

CLEP examinations are computer-based, multiple-choice format and 90 minutes in duration.  Additionally, some institutions require optional essays.

Cost

A fee of $65 is charged by the College Board for each examination taken.  Examination fees are payable by check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), to CLEP on the day of testing.

A $16 per test service fee, paid separately from the CLEP examination fee, is payable to TTC on the day of testing.  The service fee is nonrefundable and is not transferable to another test date.

Reporting of Scores

Scores for CLEP examinations taken at TTC will be reported to the examinee and the institution indicated at the time of the test.   While examinees will know their scores immediately after completing the computer-based examination, official score reports are mailed about three weeks after testing.  CLEP maintains scores for 20 years; therefore, transcript service may be requested at a later date for an additional fee.

Repeating CLEP Examinations

To be eligible to repeat a CLEP examination, a waiting period of six months is  required.  Scores on tests repeated earlier than six months are subject to cancellation and forfeiture of fees.

Study Materials

The College Board's The Official Study Guide for the CLEP Examinations contains descriptions of all CLEP exams, sample questions and answers, updated lists of reference materials for test preparation in every subject, and test-taking strategies.  You may contact a local area bookstore to obtain a copy, complete and mail the order form enclosed in the "CLEP Information for Candidates" booklet, or go online to CLEP.  To learn more about taking CLEP on computer, you can download CLEP Sampler-An introduction to taking CLEP on computer.

Examinations Accepted for Credit at TTC

Courses and credits awarded for CLEP examinations will fulfill only selected education requirements in your current program of study.  Refer to the appropriate TTC Catalog/Student Handbook to determine applicability.

CLEP examinations accepted for course exemptions, the amount of credit awarded, and score requirements are subject to change without notice.

At least a week prior to taking your test, check with Testing Services to ensure all accommodations are confirmed.

You are responsible (not your instructor or your SSD counselor) for reserving ADA testing rooms if needed.

If you believe you qualify for special needs testing, contact Services For Students With Disabilities at (843) 574-6131.
