How to Figure your Grade Point Average (GPA)

The words grade point and average give you an idea of what is involved in determining a GPA.  First, the grade point means every letter grade is assigned points:  A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0.  You will multiply the credit hours assigned to each course times the value of the letter grade you received and calculate the total value.  You will divide the total number of credit hours into the total value of the grades.  That is your average GPA.

 Example:

ASSIGNED COURSE

STUDENT'S CREDIT HOURS

GRADE

ENG 101

3

B

MAT 120

A

CPT 101

F

BIO 101

Multiply the value of the grades times the assigned credit hours and total both columns.

 33

Divide the total value of the grades by the total number of credit hours.

                              33 ÷ 13  = 2.538
33 divided by 13 is 2.538.  That is the student's GPA.
