Writing Assignment
FORMAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Purpose: The purpose of this formal writing assignment is to discuss the current evidence for the delivery of safe patient-centered care to adult medical-surgical patients.
Introduction:
The ability to use evidence is integral to planning and delivering safe clinical practice. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the thoughtful integration of the best available evidence, coupled with clinical expertise. EBP requires the nurse to assess clinical guidelines, current and past research, and other information resources in order to identify relevant, best clinical practices.
EBP involves formulating a clinical question based on current practice, identifying articles and other evidence-based resources that answer the question, and critically appraising the evidence to assess its validity. This formal writing assignment will introduce the student to the process of using evidence to determine the best clinical practice related to the chosen safety issue.
Reading Assignment: Lewis, Heitkemper, & Dirksen (2007), p. 5-7
Grading Rubric performance objectives
The student will:
- Formulate a clinical question based on current practice.
- Describe a patient safety issue and one relevant nursing intervention based on the clinical question.
- Identify relevant keywords which were used to conduct a professional database search.
- From the database search, select relevant evidence applicable to the nursing intervention.
- Discuss whether or not the selected information supports the use of the nursing intervention.
- Demonstrate a logical organization when writing the paper.
- Use appropriate grammar and spelling.
- Use American Psychological Association (APA) format.
Formal Paper Format
Refer to Policy for Formal Papers found in Student Course Materials. APA format is required for the title page, text, and reference page. Leveled headings are not required but page headers are. The length of the formal paper should be approximately one to two pages; however, the paper will be primarily evaluated on the depth of thought and exploration of topic.
Turnitin
Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct and falls under the Procedure for Disciplinary Action for Academic Misconduct as outlined in the Trident Technical College Student Handbook. Trident Technical College offers students thee ability to check for acts of plagiarism in their paper through a web-based program called Turnitin. Turnitin generates an originality report, which cites areas of plagiarism within the paper. This originality report is a requirement for this formal writing assignment. NUR 159 has an account on http://www.turnitin.com/. A Class ID log-in and enrollment password will be provided in CampusCruiser’s NUR 159 shared files.
Submission of paper
Refer to Submission of Papers found in Student Nurses Handbook. Submit the formal writing assignment prior to the start of lecture on the day noted in the course calendar. The following components must be submitted with the paper: Grading Rubric, full text articles, key word list and Turnitin’s originality report. Submit the formal writing assignment in its entirety in a two-pocket folder. Five (5) penalty points will be deducted from the assignment grade for missing the grading rubric and full text articles. Five (5) penalty points will be deducted for each day or portion of the day (including weekends and holidays) that the assignment and/or originality report is late. The assignment is incomplete without a Turnitin originality report. If a report is not received, the assignment will be graded a zero (0).
