NUR 159: Nursing Care Management II
Fall 2008 Fast Forward I and II
The faculty of NUR 159: Nursing Care Management II welcomes you to the course. Please take the time to read through the information that follows. The information, hopefully, will address your concerns regarding both the first day of class and clinical for both fast forwards. A course calendar will be posted in “shared files” during the week prior to the start of the course.
Monday, August 25 (Fast Forward I), or Friday, October 17 (Fast Forward II), is the first day of class. Bring all components of the syllabus which are found in shared files under the title of “Syllabus Components.” The course overview will be done on the first day.
The content for NUR159 will start with respiratory system and continue with hematologic, immunologic, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems. All readings for these content areas come from the Lewis, Heikamper, and Dirkesen textbook. Please note that the seventh edition is being used.

The NUR 159 syllabus will be posted in CampusCruiser the week before the first day of class. The syllabus will better define the topics that will be studied for each content area.
Tuesday, August 26 (Fast Forward I), or Tuesday, October 21 (Fast Forward II), is the first clinical day. The clinical groups are listed below, however, if locations and times change, you will be notified via CampusCruiser.

Important: Pre-clinical preparation:
1. Review the parking information below for your facility
2. Review where to meet your clinical instructor on the first day of clinical.
a. Meet at 7 am.
3. Next, review the information regarding your facility specific orientation
a. Your facility specific orientation is done thru http://www.medialabinc.net/ and is later referred to as City Wide Orientation (CWO).
4. On the first day of clinical, bring the following documents from shared files
a. All the components under the file “Clinical Worksheets.”
b. Plus clinical evaluation tool
c. Along with all the syllabus components
d. And course calendar
Parking Information and where to meet the first clinical day:
East Cooper Regional Medical Center (ECRMC) – Parking is free. Park in the back lot and enter through the emergency department (ED) doors.
MUSC – Prior to the first clinical day, please arrange parking. MUSC encourages carpooling and use of CARTA Express. MUSC does make available free parking passes for the Hagood lot. To obtain the free pass, bring your TTC picture ID badge, car make, tag number, and car registration to the MUSC parking office, on the corner of Bee and President Streets. You can also obtain a $10 CARTA Express pass from the TTC Palmer and Main Campus Bookstores. See the CARTA Express web page: http://www.ridecarta.com/ click on routes and then Express 1 and Express 2. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the main lobby of the main MUSC hospital.
Roper – Unfortunately, parking at Roper hospital is limited due to construction of the new parking facility. Students are asked to take CARTA Express or to carpool and park at the Jonathan Lucas Street garage (across from Roper ER). If a student parks at the Jonathan Lucas Street garage, students pay approximately $15 per day. Students may also consider riding the CARTA Express or finding their own parking as long as they do not park in a restricted area. CARTA passes are sold at the TTC bookstore for $10. These passes are good for 6 months. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the Calhoun Street lobby.
St. Francis Hospital – Park on the right side of the hospital in employee parking lot next to Lowe’s. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the main lobby of the hospital. Your instructor will follow up with an email.
Summerville Medical Center – Park on the left side of the hospital and enter on the left side. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the main lobby of the hospital. Your instructor will follow up with an email.
Trident Medical Center – Parking is free. Park in the garage. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the main lobby of the hospital. Your instructor will follow up with an email.
VA Medical Center (VAMC) – Parking at the VA is limited. Please consider car-pooling with classmates. You can meet on Trident Tech’s Palmer (downtown) campus and carpool to the VA. On the first day, your instructor will give you more information about parking in the Hagood lot across from Joe Riley’s stadium. After the first day, there will be three VA parking passes issued. Meet your instructor on the first day of clinical in the lobby of Bee Street.
Facility Specific Orientation
All students are required to complete their facility specific CWO. The facility specific CWO is found on http://www.medialabinc.net/ and can be accessed with the same user name and password used to access your mandatory inservices when registering for the course. If you have trouble remembering your user name and password, refer to the Student Nurses Handbook, page A-40. All students are to complete their facility specific CWO and its components prior to the first day of clinical. The facility specific CWO is considered current for one year form date of completion. If you return to a clinical site for a second rotation, you do not have to complete the CWO if it is current and will remain current during the entire clinical rotation. Below are more detailed instructions for the clinical sites.
East Cooper Regional Medical Center (ECRMC) – Facility specific CWO must be completed by the first day of clinical. Students are to print off forms from their facility specific CWO and bring to their first day of clinical. No computer charting training is required for students attending ECRMC.
MUSC – Facility specific CWO must be completed by the first day of clinical. Students are to print off forms from their facility specific CWO and bring to their first day of clinical. The following forms and security agreements are listed below:
1. CWO-MUSC certificate
2. Transcripts of CATTS mandatory education modules,
3. Signed OACIS security agreement which is found in one of the CATTS modules,
4. Signed McKesson security agreement which is also found in one of the CATTS modules regarding ClinDoc,
5. Signed communicable Disease Attestation form.
When signing into the CATTS system, your user name will be the first initials of your first name and the last 6 digits of social security number. On the first day of clinical, wear your TTC nursing uniform and TTC picture ID badge.
Roper – Facility specific CWO must be completed by the first day of clinical. Students are to print off forms from their facility specific CWO and bring to their first day of clinical.
St. Francis Hospital – Facility specific CWO must be completed by the first day of clinical. Students are to print off forms from their facility specific CWO and bring to their first day of clinical.
Summerville Medical Center – Complete the CWO for the Trident Health System which includes both Trident Hospital and Summerville Medical. PRIOR TO the first day of clinical, you are to submit the following paperwork. This paperwork is due to Mrs. Dobberfuhl.
1. CWO-Trident Health System certificate (signed)
2. Exhibit A (signed)
3. Exhibit B (signed)
4. Answers to the quiz (the quiz itself does not need to be submitted)
Trident Medical Center – Complete the CWO for the Trident Health System which includes both Trident Hospital and Summerville Medical. PRIOR TO the first day of clinical, you are expected to submit the following paperwork. This paperwork is due to Mrs. Dobberfuhl.
1. CWO-Trident Health System certificate (signed)
2. Exhibit A (signed)
3. Exhibit B (signed)
4. Answers to the quiz (the quiz itself does not need to be submitted)
VA Medical Center (VAMC) – Present to a VA human resources representative the following items. You will be contacted as to which day prior to clinical that you need this information submitted.
1. Two forms of photo ID; one of which must be government issued (e.g. drivers license)
2. Up-to-date basic life support (BLS) card
3. Official PPD and/or chest x-ray which is up-to-date
Facility specific CWO must be completed by the first day of clinical. Students are to print off the following two forms from their facility specific CWO and bring to their first day of clinical.
1. VA Cyber Security Awareness Certificate of Completion
2. VHA Privacy Policy Web training Certificate of Completion
Students are also required to attend a one-hour computer class on clinical orientation day. This class will be arranged by the instructor. Your instructor will guide you through the rest of the orientation to the VAMC.
Note: If you do not complete the required facility specific orientation and any required computer training, as specified, you will be required to make this up during clinical time. This will count as a clinical absence. You may not attend clinical until you have completed the required training.
