Coding Specialist Training Program

Career Description
The coding specialist reviews and analyzes health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters. The coding specialist is responsible for translating diagnostic and procedural phrases used by health care providers into coded form. The coded information that is a product of the coding process is then used for medical reimbursement purposes. The greater the expertise of the coder equals a greater reimbursement to the employer.

Coding Specialist Training Program
All courses within the Coding Specialist curriculum are delivered online. To enroll, you must be a high school graduate or possess a high school equivalency diploma (GED). Onsite internships are available in the Charleston area only. An online internship is available for distance students. The onsite internship consists of 90 hours of clinical experience, which have been set up at three area hospitals and other health care facilities. Those students currently working in the coding or medical billing field may substitute work hours for a portion of their internship. A verification letter is required. A certificate of achievement is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the following courses:

Each course is priced individually. All online coding courses require textbooks. Textbooks can be purchased through MBS Direct at www.mbsdirect.net or 1.800.325.3252. If using MBS Direct, it is advised to purchase textbooks 7-10 working days before each course begins to ensure textbook is in hand upon course start date. Registration for online courses ends five days prior to the start of the course. You can apply for student loans at 1.800.GO.PLATO.

Approval
The Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development's Coding Specialist Training Program is approved by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Graduates of the program are eligible to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) examination.

Medical Coding Internship

Students who have successfully completed all courses in the Coding Specialist curriculum can apply what they have learned at TTC in a real-world setting. Onsite internships are available in the Charleston area. An online internship is available for distance students. Onsite candidates must show proof of medical insurance, completion of a two-step PPD test, have a drug screen and a seven-year background check as well as completion of all courses within the Coding Specialist Training Program upon registering.
