Trident Technical Collegeís St. Paulís Parish Site is offering a variety of courses this spring in gardening, defensive driving, grant writing, healthcare and more. Free classes will also be offered in GED preparation, computer and internet basics, excel, financial aid, keyboarding. COMPASS testing is available by appointment only. The Educational Opportunity Center offers services for adults in obtaining postsecondary education.
In collaboration with Charleston County School District Adult Education, the St. Paulís Parish Site offers a GED program for adults ages 22 and older. There is no cost to participate in this program and it provides instruction, academic assessments, classroom materials and textbooks. Upon successful completion of the course requirements, eligible candidates will take the state GED test. If the student passes, they will be awarded a South Carolina High School Equivalency diploma. Classes are held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Free classes are offered at the Public Computer Center and you do not have to pre-register to participate. Weekday classes are held from 5:45-7 p.m. and Saturday classes from 10:15 a.m.-noon. Spring 2014 offerings include Keyboarding and Basics of Microsoft Word (March 18 and 22; April 15 and 19); Excel Basics (March 25; April 22); Computer Basics and the Internet (March 4 and 8; April 8 and 12); and Financial Aid (FAFSA) Workshop (March 29).
The Educational Opportunity Center assists adults in obtaining postsecondary education (beyond the high school/GED level) with services including: First-Year Experience Initiative; counseling (academic, personal and career); free academic tutoring; transfer advisement and college tours; cultural enrichment activities; workshops on study skills instruction, time management, self-esteem and other topics.
The Basic Shielded Metal Arc Welding Ė STICK course (starts March 1 and May 3) costs $545 and introduces the basic principles of SMAW Ė Stick Welding in the flat and horizontal positions. Safety, use and care of equipment are emphasized.
The Casting and Splinting course (starts March 14) costs $169 and students will learn wound care and management, the basics of bones and joints, positioning, fractures and more by practicing with fiberglass and splinting materials, using the latest in thermoplastic cast molding. Beginners and seasoned professionals will benefit.

Learn how to develop grant-writing strategies and how to research funding opportunities with the Introduction to Grant Writing class (starts March 6) which costs $59.
Drivers who have accumulated penalty points against their records can have up to four points removed upon successful completion of the Defensive Driving (DDC-8) course (starts April 19) which costs $79. Depending on your insurance carrier, there is a possible discount available. Note: This is not a course for ADSAP substance violations.
Get over the winter blues by enrolling in the class, Gardening in St. Paulís Parish (starts March 15) which costs $39. Gain a general appreciation and knowledge of soils and plant nutrition, insects and diseases. This course is for new and experienced gardeners.
