TTC OFFERS COMPOSITE REPAIR COURSE

September 10, 2009... Learn how to work on the fiberglass parts of boats, motorcycles, trucks and more in the Composite Repair – Fiberglass course. This continuing education course meets 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays, Oct. 10-17, at TTC’s Main Campus in North Charleston. Cost is $199.

The course begins with a brief description of fiberglass. Several fiberglass fabrics are handled and discussed, and safety and disposal are covered. Students get hands-on with polyester resin, MEKP, cabosil, microballoons, chopped glass, milled glass, milled cotton, acetone, styrene and measuring devices. Each chemical, device and tool is discussed and demonstrated as well as five types of resin: boatyard polyester, GP polyester, vinylester, isophthalic and epoxies. The course is based primarily on polyester resins, the original material used to build most fiberglass boats, trucks, etc. Students repair a damaged fiberglass laminate panel in class, choosing materials and completing the repair.
