Trident Technical College will offer a Basic Constable Training course at its Berkeley Campus in Moncks Corner. Classes begin Aug. 10. Cost is $429, which includes books.
The continuing education course covers policies and procedures, constitutional law, laws of arrest, search and seizure, crisis intervention, evidence, and handling of prisoners. Other topics include officer survival, police communications, ethics, juvenile procedures/child abuse, police/community relations, civil liability and firearms. A minimum of 24 hours of firearms training is required.
To receive the state constable’s commission, students must score 70 percent or above on the final written exam and pass the firearms training. Firearms training dates will be announced in the first class session. The examination will not be offered at the end of the class. Students successfully completing the course must schedule an appointment to take the examination in Columbia. Details of this process are discussed in class.

Students must be pre-approved by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and bring the SLED approval letter to the first day of class. If the letter is not brought to class, the student’s registration will be cancelled and a refund will be issued.
