NAOMI DUGUID TO SPEAK ON CHINA’S RECIPES AND TRAVEL

October 15, 2008...

Traveler, writer, photographer and cook Naomi Duguid is your guide on an adventure of China’s borderland cultures through recipes and stories. Duguid will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 in the Culinary Institute of Charleston amphitheater on Trident Technical College’s Palmer Campus, 66 Columbus Street, downtown Charleston. The presentation is free and open to the public.

From sticky rice to flatbreads, the Taklimakan Desert to the Plateau of Tibet, Duguid’s voyage illustrates how food functions both as a means of preserving identity and incorporating cultural and economic changes into the community. This presentation is part of “Trading Tastes: Islam, the Indian Ocean and the Asia-Africa Interchange,” a program for educators, which is supported by the Humanities Council SC, the Asian Studies Development Program of the East-West Center, and TTC’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences.
