Career Description
Certified nurse aides perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. CNAs monitor and record vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure. Other duties include personal care with bathing, dressing and toileting; assisting with meals; transfers and ambulation; linen changes and room organization; and safety issues following facility policies and procedures.
Certified Nurse Aide Training Program
TTC's Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development offers comprehensive training for individuals with the desire to become a certified nurse aide. Students are required to complete 50 hours of classroom training and 50 hours of clinical training involving hands-on resident care at a long-term care facility. Students must attend the first lecture session and the first day of lab skills practice in the classroom course and the first session of the clinical course to be eligible to attend the remainder of the course. Students who successfully complete both the classroom and clinical training are eligible to take the S.C. Nurse Aide Certification Exam. Upon successfully passing the NNAAP CNA state exam, students are eligible for a TTC CNA lapel pin.
Clinical Site Prerequisite
Before entering any patient care facility, all students are required to provide proof of two negative TB tests (PPDs). The PPD skin test is used to determine if the individual has ever been exposed to tuberculosis. Positive PPD results will require a normal chest X-ray. Chest X-rays must be ordered and read by a physician. A physician's signature is required on reading of the X-ray. The first PPD must be planted (administered) with the result read at 48 hours. The second PPD must be planted no sooner than seven days and no later than 30 days after the first planting. The final result of the second reading must be dated within the previous 90 days from the first day of clinical training at a facility site. The results of two PPDs taken in this manner are referred to as a two-step TB test and can be obtained at a private physician office, some health departments and other health care facilities. Two-step PPD forms can be found in the CNA Handbook. Results of a negative two-step PPD or X-ray will be required at the time of registration for the clinical training. Incomplete TB test results or X-ray information will prevent registration.
Students have four months to complete the CNA training. The four-month timeframe is from the first day of the classroom session to the last day of the clinical training session. If the student has not completed clinical training within four months, classroom training must be repeated. Students will receive a certificate of achievement after completing both the classroom and clinical courses. For more information, call Jean Nisbet at 843.574.6024.
